Dubai summit focuses on green economy transition

The eighth World Green Economy Summit (WGES), to be held in Dubai in September, will focus on accelerating the transition to a green economy and driving sustainable development.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) will be under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai on 28-29 September Next organize the summit, said a report by the Warm News Agency.

WGES will take place at the Dubai World Trade Centre and will focus on decarbonizing the energy system; environmental, social and corporate governance strategies; mobilizing investment for green growth; promoting sustainable transport and mobility networks; future-proofing the built environment; developing innovative technologies to Supporting the low-carbon transition; robust and resilient value chains; and engaging the next generation to make net zero a reality.

“The objectives of the WGES are in line with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s directive on the need to balance economic growth with the sustainability of natural and environmental resources. WGES also supports the UAE’s efforts to host the 28th Conference of the Parties under the United Nations Framework Convention 2023 The Climate Change Conference (COP28) held at Expo City Dubai in 2018. It also supports the UAE’s efforts to achieve the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals, the 2050 Dubai Clean Energy Strategy and the 2050 Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emission Strategy to provide 100% of Dubai’s total electricity generation from clean energy by 2050,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Deputy Chairman of Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA and Chairman of WGES.

He added that since its inception in 2014, WGES has achieved significant growth and achievements by developing policies, programmes and initiatives to strengthen international collaboration between business leaders and global experts from the public and private sectors.

Al Tayer noted: “WGES is a strategic platform to support international cooperation to address global challenges, promote sustainable development and investment in the green economy, and to adopt effective policies, programmes and initiatives in this regard.”

WGES will bring together intellectuals, government agencies and large corporations from around the world, as well as leaders of sustainability funds. This is to exchange best practices and explore a green and fair economy both theoretically and practically. WGES will involve all members of society and allow youth to play an important role in creating a sustainable future.
