One of the defendants admitted to posting a video to attract more Instagram followers
A European man and an Asian man were sentenced to one year in jail for throwing counterfeit currency worth 50,000 euros from a car window and fined 200,000 dirhams respectively.
The accused European posted a video on Instagram that showed him, accompanied by the second defendant, bathing a worker working in Al Quoz with counterfeit money.
According to the investigation, the cybercrime patrol of the Dubai Police discovered this video. Given that the defendants’ cars were crowded with workers, the authorities accused them of endangering workers’ safety and ignoring Covid-19 safety rules. After further investigation, the police also found that the money was fake.
The European defendant told the police that he had posted the video to his Instagram account to attract fans.
The two defendants were handed over to the public prosecution agency in Dubai and eventually to the criminal court for felony smuggling, possession and circulation of counterfeit currency in the country.
The criminal court sentenced them to two years in prison. The Court of Appeal shortened the period to one year.
