The United Arab Emirates has updated visa rules, affecting jobs, investment and innovation, as the country looks to improve its competitive advantage. The latest amendment introduces a five-year green visa, which will benefit skilled workers, self-employed individuals and investors.
Shiraz Sethi, Regional Head of Employment at Dentons & Co, said the UAE government has been pushing to ensure that the employment landscape is forever changing. He revealed that remote and temporary work is a post-pandemic requirement that needs to be addressed.

Benefits for expats
Previously, a work visa was required to be renewed with a sponsor every two to three years. This new five-year visa offers greater stability and flexibility while creating a more competitive talent pool. Advantages include:
• Five-year self-sponsorship for eligible individuals
• Residence permits for children, spouses and immediate family members
• Sponsor boys and girls under the age of 25, regardless of age
• A six-month grace period to stay in the United Arab Emirates when the visa expires or is cancelled
Immigration Policy Changes
The move comes as the country recently launched a 10-year golden visa for outstanding talent, investors, skilled workers and entrepreneurs. These new visa tracks are the biggest changes to date in the country’s immigration policy.
James Watfa, managing director of Executive Solutions, noted that some skills sector shortages in the UAE include healthcare and technology. He told Euronews, “The new visas will give people more flexibility and a bigger talent pool for companies that already have a base here, specifically targeting these niche skills.”
He also predicted an increase in the temporary contract market, “I expect more three-, six- and 12-month contracts to be awarded with talent actually being here rather than abroad.”
