Dubai’s green charger scheme boosts number of electric cars

The Green Charger initiative by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) to increase the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Dubai has had a huge impact on the number of electric and hybrid vehicles.

A report by WAM claims that the number of green chargers will reach 350 by the end of 2022, with more than 620 charging points in Dubai. The 74th meeting of the Dubai Supreme Energy Council (DSCE), chaired by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, was informed that the number of electric vehicles will reach 15,100 by the end of 2022, while hybrid The number of powered cars will reach 13,500.

The meeting also reviewed the Dubai Waste Management Center in Al Warsan, the largest waste-to-energy center of its kind. This was launched by Dubai Municipality in partnership with Dubai Holding and Dubal Holding. The project has achieved 91% progress and the first phase will be operational by May 2023. The project is an important step forward in waste management and waste-to-energy, in line with the UAE’s sustainable development goals, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, vice-chairman of DSCE, who was present at the meeting, was informed.

Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of DSCE, also attended the meeting; Abdulla bin Kalban, Managing Director of Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA); Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of Enoch; Juan-Pablo Freile, General Manager of Dubai Petroleum; Hussain Al Banna, Acting Chief Executive Officer, Strategy and Corporate Governance, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The meeting also discussed DSCE-supported initiatives and programs that will serve as a platform to bring together the government and private sector in Dubai and expand the scope of current applications based on the principles of the circular economy.

The UAE attaches great importance to achieving sustainable development and efficient use of natural resources by transitioning to a green economy and increasing the share of renewable and clean energy.

The UAE Circular Economy Policy sets priorities in this sector. Priorities include green infrastructure, sustainable transport, sustainable manufacturing, and sustainable food production and consumption.

Al Tayer said: “We are guided by the vision of our wise leadership to anticipate and shape the future. In Dubai, we have a clear vision which includes the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Take concrete steps to develop pioneering projects that support the UAE’s ambition to build a successful green economy model for the future. At Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council, we launch initiatives and regularly review work plans to ensure that the national strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and Consolidate the low-carbon economy.

“Our initiatives underpin the UAE’s leading role in implementing best practices and adopting the latest technologies. These will be reviewed during COP28, which will be hosted in the UAE in November 2023.”
