During his visit to the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC), Sheikh Mohammed said the Rashid 2 spacecraft will be developed and sent to space, state news agency WAM reported on Wednesday.

Japan’s ispace said it lost contact with the Hakuto-R Mission 1 spacecraft carrying the UAE’s Rashid rover shortly before touchdown. The spacecraft is on a 4.5-month mission with the goal of becoming the first private enterprise to successfully land on the moon.

On Wednesday, Sheikh Mohammed met with the UAE team that made the first attempt to land a rover on the surface of the moon. Emphasizing the importance of determination to succeed in the space industry, Sheikh Mohammed said the UAE will continue to launch new space exploration missions.

He noted that while attempts to land the Rashid rover on the moon were unsuccessful, “we’ve always had high hopes.”

“The UAE has demonstrated their ability to develop advanced space programs and quickly create a vibrant national space sector,” he further said. “The UAE has built a space sector from scratch in just 10 years. The Rashid rover mission is driven by the country’s ambitious vision for space exploration.”

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, said that any space mission must deal with high risks and it manages these risks in a scientific and systematic manner to advance exploration and experimentation.

Sheikh Hamdan said the UAE will continue to develop its expertise and build an advanced space sector. Interacting with the MBRSC team, he said, “Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid once said, ‘The greatest risk in life is to take no risk’.”

Noting the UAE’s readiness to enter a new phase in space exploration, he said, “Today, under the direction and direction of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, we announce the launch of the Rashid 2 project, which is UAE’s new attempt to reach the moon.”

The Rashid rover integrated into iSpace’s HAKUTO-R lander successfully launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Dec. Launch site (SLC-40) lifted off.

ELM marks the UAE’s first lunar mission, making the UAE the first Arab country to land on the lunar surface.

The Rashid rover is the world’s most compact rover designed to traverse and explore the lunar surface in a unique configuration. The rover weighs about 10 kilograms, is about 80 centimeters high, is about 53.5 centimeters long, and is about 53.85 centimeters wide.

MBRSC collaborates with 10 international entities and 4 UAE entities on the scientific program of the UAE lunar mission. Working with nearly 40 scientists and researchers, MBRSC developed the main instruments on the Rashid rover, the optical camera, the microscopic imager and the Langmuir detector.
