Dubal, Quantafuel, BASF sign FEED agreement for plastic recycling plant

Dubal Holding, Quantafuel and BASF are entering the Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) phase of a chemical recycling plant for waste plastics in Dubai.

After a six-month feasibility study, which determined the main design parameters and secured the site and raw materials, the project is now entering the FEED phase, with BASF as a partner in the new phase of the project. A potential final investment decision (FID) is targeted for early 2023, a statement said.

Dubal Holding, the Dubai government’s investment arm in commodities and mining, power and energy, and industry; technology-based recycling company Quantafuel and global chemical company BASF today signed an agreement for the development of Plastics-to-Liquids (PtL) in Dubai The processing plant performs Front End Engineering Design (FEED).

It said the PtL project would be an important step towards a circular economy, converting low-quality, non-recyclable plastics into valuable products and helping Dubai achieve its goal of zero waste to landfill by 2030.

The partners have agreed to collaborate and share the development costs of the plant based on the learning and optimization of Quantafuel’s first full-scale commercial plant in Skive, Denmark. Saipem, an Italian engineering and construction specialist, has been selected as the FEED service provider. The development FEED for the 80,000-tonne-per-year plant will be completed in 2022, with a potential final investment decision scheduled for early 2023.
