Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor has stage IV metastatic prostate cancer.
The 61-year-old was diagnosed four years ago and his bandmate Simon Le Bon fears he won’t “stay long”.
Duran Duran announced their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday (05.11.22) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Andy was due to reunite with singer Simon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor at the event, but he said he suffered a “setback” that took him away from his time in Ibiza. Home’s trip to Los Angeles is physically and mentally too taxing.
The band read a letter from Andy during the ceremony, in which he revealed he had received life-prolonging treatment for cancer.
It said: “Just over four years ago, I was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic prostate cancer.
“Many families have experienced the slow burn of this disease, and of course we are no exception; so I speak from the perspective of a family man, but to the band, the greatest fan a band could have and this extraordinary honor With profound humility.
“I have ‘Rogers and Edwards’ Doctors (Turan Duran producers Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards) and medical, which until recently kept me rocking.
“While my current condition is not immediately life-threatening, there is no cure.
“After some very complex life-extending treatments recently, I was doing fine until about a week ago when I suffered a setback and despite the extraordinary efforts of my team, I have to be honest, physically and mentally, I will push my boundaries.”
Simon, 64, said: “It’s absolutely devastating news to learn that a colleague, not a colleague, a friend, a friend, our family, won’t be around for long.
“We love Andy so much, I’m not going to stand here and cry. I don’t think that would be appropriate, but that’s how I feel.”
