Dutch GP shows Mercedes not ‘learning’ from Abu Dhabi

[ad_1]

Jos Verstappen teased that the Dutch Grand Prix showed Mercedes didn’t “learn” from Abu Dhabi last year.

Does his son Max overtake Lewis Hamilton in the Safety Car restart last Sunday at Zandvoort on fresher, softer tires? Does that sound familiar?

The seven-time world champion then gave his team a tirade over the radio, but apologize later And insists he supports those who make strategic decisions at Mercedes.

“100% we do have the right team,” he said.

“We have a group of young, determined people. Some are as old as me and have been on the team longer and continue to be motivated every year and I’m 1000% confident that we have the right team place.

“It was not an easy decision,” Hamilton noted.

“Of course, we can always look back and say we would have made different choices in certain situations. But that’s not life, we just learn from it.

“I want to be on the podium, I want at least first or second place.”

While Red Bull boss Christian Horner did not mention Mercedes’ decision to exclude Hamilton, he did wonder why George Russell was allowed to pit during the safety car for a software change.

“I’m surprised they didn’t strategically exclude George from Lewis’ rear gunners,” he said. “When he pitted, Max and Lewis had a straight fight and the tires were off.

“My biggest fear was that it would be two-on-one. But when George seemed to be about to get himself in trouble, that freed up Max’s one-on-one fight with Lewis.

“Max was already there when they passed us on the pit wall and after that it was a matter of controlling the game.”

Verstappen Sr digs the Mercedes though irresistible.

“It was very nervous but Red Bull came out on top again,” Jos told The Telegraph.

“Max tried all the tyres and pointed out which one was the best fit. Mercedes also did a good job and they definitely had a chance to win. But luckily it worked out well for us.

“You’d think Mercedes learned a lesson from last year’s race in Abu Dhabi, but apparently not.” Ouch
