DXB passenger traffic surged to 27.9 million in half a year

Steady growth throughout the second quarter propelled Dubai International Airport’s (DXB) half-year passenger traffic to 27.9 million, just 1.2 million less than the airport’s full-year passenger volume last year.

The milestone was achieved despite DXB closing its northern runway for 45 days in May-June for a major refurbishment project, resulting in a significant drop in capacity.

For the ninth consecutive quarter of growth recovery since the start of the pandemic, DXB recorded 14.2 million passengers in the second quarter of 2022, a year-on-year increase of 190.6%.

The hub received 27,884,888 passengers in the first half of the year, an increase of 161.9% over the first half of 2021. Passenger traffic accounted for 67.5% of DXB’s pre-pandemic traffic in the same period in 2019.

popular destinations
India remained the largest destination country for DXB passenger traffic, with 4 million passengers in the first half of the year, mainly driven by top urban destinations such as Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Saudi Arabia came in second with 2 million passengers, followed by the UK with 1.9 million. Other notable national destinations include Pakistan (1.7 million passengers) and the United States (1.4 million passengers).

The top three cities were London (1.3 million), Riyadh (910,000) and Mumbai (726,000).

goods
DXB handled 390,520 tonnes of cargo in the second quarter, bringing total cargo volumes for the first six months of 2022 to 910,075 tonnes, a contraction of 18.9%. DXB’s cargo volumes were impacted in the second quarter by the relocation of major cargo operators back to Dubai World Centre (DWC) in March.

As the bulk of DXB’s cargo is carried in passenger aircraft cargo bays, total cargo volumes were impacted by reduced capacity due to the northern runway refurbishment programme that took place between May 9 and June 22.

flight
In the first six months of 2022, DXB handled a total of 154,993 flight movements, an increase of 55.9% compared to the first half of 2021. This figure accounted for 87% of DXB’s pre-pandemic flight movements in the first half of 2019.

“DXB has recovered very well from the impact of the global pandemic and this position is strengthened in 2022, especially in the second quarter. Not only has Dubai Airport managed the recovery successfully, but the quality of customer service has remained the same,” Dubai Airport CEO Paul Griffith said.

“We knew at the beginning of the pandemic that a sharp downturn would be followed by an equally sharp upturn, so we were well prepared for this and were able to predict the start of a recovery using all the business data we had. The community’s service partners are ready to deliver the consistently smooth and hassle-free experience passengers have come to expect at DXB.”

waiting time
Thanks to DXB’s investment in the latest biometric technology, Smart Gates is now speeding customers through the immigration process, and our state-of-the-art Operations Control Center uses real-time information to improve service and efficiency across all touchpoints. Despite the surge in foot traffic, customer wait times also remained low.

In the first half of the year, 96% of passengers queued at exit passport control for less than 5 minutes, while 97% of passengers queued at exit security for an average of less than 3 minutes*.

luggage
DXB’s 175-kilometer baggage handling system handled a total of 27.1 million bags in the first half of 2022, with a success rate of 99.8% (1.75 incorrect bags per 1,000 passengers). Hub-wise, the performance is impressive. In terms of arrival baggage delivery, 92% of bags are delivered within 30 minutes.

The current baggage volume accounted for 77.2% of the DXB baggage volume during the same period in 2019.

forecast
Dubai Airports has revised up its annual forecast for 2022 to 62.4 million, based on a strong first half and forecast for an average monthly passenger traffic of 5.6 million in the second half. – arab trade news agency
