EAD helps make Abu Dhabi more sustainable

The Environment Authority of Abu Dhabi (EAD), the emirate’s main environmental regulator and leader in implementing sustainable best practices, is one of the main sponsors of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, ADSW will help shape the sustainable development agenda ahead of COP28, the UAE climate conference to be held in late 2023.

Under the theme “Uniting for Climate Action at COP28”, ADSW will establish the UAE leadership’s commitment to practical and inclusive climate action. The event will also serve as an important gathering of global sustainability decision makers and key stakeholders who will be involved in key discussions ahead of COP28.

ADSW will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center from January 14th to 19th.

The agency is working with Masdar, the organizer of ADSW, to ensure the success of the event, with the agency’s team of qualified experts participating in a series of events on site.

Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, EAD Secretary General, said: “At EAD, we are very proud to be a strategic partner with Masdar for Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023. The global status of the leader, but also an important hub for a very international dialogue. At the ADSW Summit, world leaders from government, business and finance will come together to take action and work together to create a climate roadmap for a net-zero future Al Dhaheri will participate in a dialogue-led session titled ” The Business Case for Biodiversity”, 17 January.

Al Dhaheri will join Carlos Manuel Duarte, Distinguished Professor of Marine Science at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, to discuss how human well-being, economic stability and food security all depend on thriving gender into their business strategies, and which technological innovations will lead to positive outcomes.

Al Dhaheri will also participate in the Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable Energy (WiSER) Forum – a platform dedicated to empowering women to be leaders and advocates for sustainable change. The event brings together international policymakers, industry leaders and other influential figures to shed light on pressing issues related to women and sustainable development. This year’s theme is “Empowering Women to Lead Climate Adaptation”.

She will join Maitha Al Hameli, Marine Assessment and Conservation Group Manager, EAD’s Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Unit, for a discussion on “Protecting Biodiversity and Ecosystems”.

In another session at WiSER, Sheikha Al Mazroui, Acting Executive Director of EAD’s Integrated Environmental Policy and Planning Unit, will participate in a discussion on climate-resilient infrastructure.

The agency will also be an integral part of the Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S) platform under which Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office Held under the patronage of His Royal Highness. The Youth Engagement Platform aims to help young people become future sustainable leaders.

On January 17th, EAD will organize a conference entitled “EAD Survey 2022: Capturing Youth Voices on Climate Change”. Khansa Al Blouki, EAD’s Director of Environmental Outreach, Environmental Information, Science and Outreach Management, will moderate the discussion and share highlights from the UAE’s largest ever youth survey on climate change.

As part of Youth Connect, members of the EAD Youth Committee will participate in two forums. The first session – “Modeling the World’s Climate” – will be held on 16 January. This group role-playing exercise will simulate international climate change negotiations, giving participants the opportunity to explore the risks of climate change and the challenges of negotiating an international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The second is on January 17 and focuses on “Blue Carbon Habitats and Nature-Based Solutions”. The session, chaired by Maitha Al Hameli and Jane Glavan, co-owner of Distant Imagery, will explore what nature-based solutions are, how they are applied in the UAE, and why blue carbon is one of the most important and effective nature-based solutions Solutions to climate change, and how mangroves play a key role.

The agency will also place a number of Big Zero installations throughout ADNEC so attendees can safely dispose of their single-use plastic bottles, which will later be collected and sent to recycling facilities. The Big Zero installation is part of the ‘Mission Zero’ public awareness campaign, which aims to achieve zero plastic, waste, emissions and biodiversity destruction in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. –TradeArabia News Service
