The preliminary report stated that at least 20 people died after a 5.7 magnitude earthquake east of Quetta.
Disaster management officials said at least 20 people were killed after the earthquake that struck southern Pakistan early on Thursday.
Sohail Anwar Hashmi, a senior provincial government official, told AFP that many victims died when the roof and walls collapsed.
He said that among the dead were a woman and six children.
“The news we received is that 20 people were killed in the earthquake. Rescue work is underway,” the provincial interior minister Mirzia Uralango added.
Nasser Nassar, director of the Balochistan Disaster Management Bureau, told AFP that 15 to 20 people have died, but the death toll may increase.
The earthquake occurred at around 3 am (22:00 GMT) when many people were sleeping. Hanai is a mountainous city about 170 kilometers (106 miles) east of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan.
The earthquake recorded by the European Mediterranean Seismic Center (EMSC) was 5.7, an upgrade from the earlier 5.4.
According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.7 and the depth was approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles).
Pakistan straddles the intersection of the Indian and Eurasian plates, so it is prone to earthquakes.
