Ed Sheeran has donated almost £1m to help children learn music.
The 31-year-old singer has donated almost £500,000 over the past five years through his Framlingham Foundation Trust, a charitable scheme – traded under the name of the Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation or ESSMF – which has a similar amount earmarked for Looking for funding for young people for instruments, concerts and rehearsal spaces, accounts have shown.
A source told the Sunday Mirror: “Ed has never forgotten what it took him to get to the top and the impact music had on his life. It’s fantastic that he’s helping in this way.”
Ed’s funds were also used to buy equipment for his and his wife Cherry’s old school, the music department at Thomas Mills School in Framlingham, Suffolk, for which the institution received £30,000.
The school’s music director Richard Hanley praised the support of the “Lego House” producers.
He said: “At a time when music and the arts are under pressure and threats in schools, it’s great to know that students at this school have a source of support to enable equal opportunities for all.
“It sends a clear message that music and art are essential elements of a broad and balanced education and an essential part of the human experience.”
Another school in the ‘Shape of You’ singer’s hometown of St Michael was awarded £17,000 as part of an after-school song and dance education programme.
Ed said: “The reason I’m doing this in Suffolk is [because] This is where I grew up, I still live here, I learned how to play music here, and I feel like I get a lot of support from this area, and I want to give some back. “
The ‘Castle on the Hill’ producer – with her daughter Lyra, two and six-month-old sons Jupiter and Cherry – has previously admitted he would rather give up his actor’s fortune to help people than keep it to yourself.
He said: “It’s like ‘earn a penny, spend a penny’ with me. As soon as it comes in, it goes out. I don’t have much value in it. […] I value more that my friends and family are okay. “
