Ed Sheeran played the chord progression of his hit “Thinking Out Loud” and sang some of the lyrics on the witness stand in Manhattan federal court Thursday in a trial over whether he copied Marvin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get it On” .
As the first witness in his defence, the British singer-songwriter described how he wrote the song about undying love in 2014, after he started a new romantic relationship and his grandfather died soon.
“I took a lot of inspiration from my life and my family,” said Sheeran, who is being sued by the heirs of composer Ed Townsend, who co-wrote Guy’s 1973 song. The heirs are looking to share in the profits of “Think Out Loud.”
Sheeran said his friend and collaborator Amy Wadge started strumming the song’s chords during a visit to his home in England, and they collaborated on the lyrics.
In the stands, he sang “I’m Singing It Now,” which he said he sang during a songwriting session with Wadge. He said the line sounded like “I’m thinking out loud,” which eventually became the headline.
“When I write vocal melodies, it’s like speech,” Sheeran said.
He then picked up a guitar from behind the witness stand, strummed the song’s chord progressions, and sang the opening line: “When your legs don’t work like they used to.”
Earlier this week, lawyers for The Heirs released a video showing Sheeran seamlessly transitioning between “Think Out Loud” and “Let’s Get On” during a live performance, which they said amounted to an admission that he copied the song. Song.
The trial is expected to resume on Monday … Reuters
