Elisharon Borgini and her Trek-Segafredo teammates took part in a GC masterclass over the four-day race UAE Women’s Tour That kept them completely out of trouble in the crosswind and allowed Longo Borghini and teammate Gaia Realini to dominate the one-two finish at Jebel Hafeet.

Predictably, it was the hilltop finish of stage three that determined the GC’s all-Italian podium after stage four, with Longo Borghini claiming the red jersey, seven seconds ahead of Realini and one ahead of UAE Team ADQ’s Silvia Persico Minutes and 18 seconds.

“I’m really proud to be the first woman to win this tour and I’m looking forward to the next one. I hope this tour will be a classic on the February schedule because it’s very well organized and This Tour can show a lot of women’s schedules and give the drivers the attention they deserve,” Longo Borghini said after the race.

The Italian was quick to thank her Trek-Segafredo teammates for keeping her safe in the crosswind and allowing her and Realini to complete the third stage climb.

“My team mates were great. Especially yesterday, they really showed up when needed, especially on the flat sections, we basically made a difference as we did cut some of the main contenders in GC because of the wind ,”she says.

“Lauretta [Hanson]Eleanor [Backstedt]and hilaria [Sanguinetti] It’s full in echelon and Gaia, I just need to get it done on the climb. Yesterday Gaia was I think the ‘MVP’ of the day, she was very strong and it was an honor to be with her at the finish line, celebrating with your teammates is something you always dream about. “

By winning the hilltop finish, Longo Borghini solidified her status as one of peloton’s most versatile drivers, able to win races such as Paris-Roubaix and also triumph on the hill climb.

“I’m a very good generalist,” she explains. “I can ride pretty well everywhere. Maybe I’m not a super climber, or a super classic rider, but I can advocate for myself in every area, and I think I can be a good asset to the team because I can also Helping my teammates, they win them more professionally in different races. So I’m proud of myself. Of course, riding on cobblestones is very different from Jebel Hafeet, but anyway, it’s the best effort you have to give .”

She also explained that her focus will now turn to the classics before turning to the stage races and the Tour de France later in the season. Now, though, she’ll be celebrating her victory in Abu Dhabi:

“We have a late flight tonight so we’re planning to hang out with the crew and have some drinks and ice cream with the girls because it’s nice to celebrate with someone who is always behind the scenes and never shines Like the mechanic, the sommelier, the sporting director and everyone on the team, so it’s really fun to be together and spend some time together,” she said.
