Elon Musk lifts Donald Trump’s Twitter ban | Entertainment

[ad_1]

Donald Trump’s Twitter account has been restored.

The former US president was permanently banned from the platform following the January 2021 attack on the US Capitol in Washington – when his supporters stormed the building as votes were being counted to verify Joe Biden’s election Victory — but the site’s new owner, Elon Musk, who has now waived his suspension, started an online poll a few days later asking whether the “Apprentice” star should be allowed back.

Musk tweeted: “People have spoken up. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.”

Shortly after, @RealDonaldTrump went live again, but the 75-year-old businessman has yet to tweet from the account since the ban was lifted.

The 51-year-old businessman, who recently acquired the Weibo platform for $44 billion, launched a poll late last week on Trump’s reinstatement.

Above the voting button, he wrote: “Restore former President Trump (sic)”

The Tesla boss added “Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” a Latin expression that means “the voice of the people is the voice of God,” after his original tweet.

Elon later added: “Trump polls get about a million votes an hour! (sic)”

The billionaire recently approved the decision to reactivate the Twitter accounts of Kathy Griffin and Jordan Peterson.

However, he claimed at the time that “Trump’s decision has not been made.”

In January 2021, Trump, 76, was suspended following the attack on the Capitol.

The microblogging platform explained that the account was suspended due to “the risk of further incitement to violence”.

Twitter said in a statement: “After carefully reviewing recent tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and their context – specifically how they were received and interpreted on and off Twitter – we have permanently suspended the account, Because there is a risk of further incitement to violence.”

Musk said in May that if he bought the platform, he would reverse Trump’s ban because he believed the decision was a “mistake.”

He said: “Permanent bans should be extremely rare and really reserved for bot accounts, scam accounts, spam accounts… I do think it would be incorrect to ban Donald Trump.

“I think it was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the country and didn’t end up causing Donald Trump to lose his voice.”
