Emirates News Agency – Abu Dhabi Arabic Center announces ‘Focus on Rights’ grant program recipients

ABU DHABI, 20th November, 2022 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Arabic Center, ALC, part of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi DCT, has announced the grantee funding program for ‘Rights Focus’ , supports Arabic translation, and the production of digital and audio titles.

The call for applications will be announced during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) in May 2022. More than 2,000 applications were received, almost double the 1,037 applications received last year. So far this year, 135 applicants have been supported and 71 publishers from 16 countries have benefited from the program.

Dr Ali nin Tamim, Chairman of the ALC, said: “The enthusiasm we have seen for the ‘Rights Focus’ initiative from publishers around the world reinforces our determination at the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center to encourage talented Arabic authors, translations and audiovisual content Creators. Not only will this support creativity, translation and publishing in Arabic, but it will also stimulate interest in learning the language for both native and non-native speakers. The program reminds us of the importance of intellectual property and publishing best practices in the region, Especially in the area of ​​digital content.”

Since its launch in 2009, the program has strengthened ALC’s relationships with Arabic and international publishers, supporting more than 120 publishers to publish more than 900 titles across categories such as children’s literature, science, history and social science and others.

The Rights in Focus grant program supports the ALC’s mission to disseminate Arabic culture and literature internationally in Arabic and other languages ​​in all fields of knowledge. The initiative also encourages the exchange of book rights between Arabic and international publishers, translates more works from Arabic to Arabic, and provides opportunities to build and develop long-term relationships with publishers participating in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.

The scheme offers grants of up to AED 14,700 for translation of printed books into or from Arabic, and grants of up to AED 7,400 per book for conversion from print books to e-book or audiobook formats Ram.
