ABU DHABI, 24th August, 2022 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) has closed the nominations for the inaugural ‘Kanz Al Jeel’ award organised by the ALC for Nabati poetry and folk studies and research The subject, and awarded to scholars and creators whose works explore the rich heritage and true value of Nabati’s poetry.
The award’s committee received 234 submissions across all six categories, with research and research categories accounting for the highest percentage of total submissions at 37%, followed by poetry publications at 23%, poetry matching at 19% and art at 10%. %, translation at 4%, and lastly the creative personality category at 6%.
Entries came from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Algeria, Sudan, Yemen, Iraq, Morocco, Syria, India, Bangladesh, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates. The next stage will be the evaluation process, setting the stage for announcing the shortlist.
ALC President Dr Ali bin Tamim asserted: “In its first edition, the Kanz Al Jeel Prize has succeeded in revealing the creative minds of Nabati poetry everywhere, exploring their contribution to this authentic art form that embodies the culture and aspirations of the people. This in turn supports our strategic objective at ALC to embrace talent in this very prestigious field of literature and art – poetry. This award is of extraordinary value as it shares the name and work of the late Sheikh, the founding father of the UAE About Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. ALC takes all works submitted for this award very seriously, and the number of applications shows that future generations will make a great contribution to enriching the local and Arabic literary world, creating a series of works that will immortalize the art of Nabati poetry.”
Eissa Saif Al Mazrouei, Chair of the Prize’s High Committee, said: “The first Kanz Al Jeel Prize underlines the important place the art of poetry occupies around the world, especially as the High Committee of the Prize receives a large number of applications from all over the world. Reflects the large number of talented and creative minds that exist in all societies where Nabati poetry and research exist. We are confident that the number of participants and the number of countries participating in the award will increase significantly in the next edition.”
The Kanz Al Jeel Awards include AED 200,000 for each category, with the exception of Creative Personality, which is worth AED 500,000. Inspired by the poetry of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, the award aims to promote poetry as a mirror of society and underscore its prominence in the conscience of the UAE and Arabs.
The awards recognize outstanding works of poetry by publishing and presenting their authors. It also aims to highlight the aesthetic and humanistic values of the late Sheikh Zayed’s poetry, in addition to preserving the legacy of Nabati’s poetry and strengthening future generations’ connection to his identity through poetry, culture and heritage.
