Emirates News Agency – Abu Dhabi selects French consortium for second phase of road lighting LED project

ABU DHABI, 19th December, 2022 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Investment Office, ADIO, in partnership with the Department of Municipalities and Transport, DMT, has selected the French consortium EDF (Electricité de France) and ENGIE to deliver the second phase of its road Lighting LED Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project.

DMT has signed a partnership agreement with Nojoom, a joint venture between EDF and ENGIE, to deliver the project in the UAE capital.

The project is part of a wider Abu Dhabi Road Lighting initiative and includes the financing, supply, installation, operation and maintenance of 133,473 LED energy-efficient luminaires in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Over the 12-year concession period, this will save nearly 2.4 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to a reduction in electricity consumption of approximately 74%.

Abdulla Abdul Aziz AlShamsi, Acting Director General of ADIO, said: “The completion of the second phase of the tender for LED road lighting demonstrates the strength of Abu Dhabi’s PPP framework and our commitment to supporting partnerships between the public and private sectors to enable strategic collaboration in infrastructure projects “Building on the success of the first phase, the partnership agreement with DMT will significantly reduce energy consumption in the UAE’s road lighting infrastructure, making an important contribution to the UAE’s ambitious sustainable development goals.”

Dr Salem Al Kaabi, Director General of Operations at DMT, said: “The strategic partnership between the government and the private sector is an important step towards adopting advanced technologies and creating sustainable infrastructure.

“The implementation of the second phase of this project will help reduce energy consumption resulting from the installation of energy-efficient lighting that meets the highest quality standards and support improved road safety in smirate. This will help improve Abu Dhabi as we move forward with this critical project. quality of life in the emirate of Dhabi, our teams will continue to work with all relevant partners.”

The project was procured in accordance with Abu Dhabi’s PPP Law and ADIO’s Partner Project Guidelines and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Policy. EDF and ENGIE signed a cooperation agreement with DMT following a comprehensive three-stage evaluation of proposals submitted by pre-qualified bidders. The selected consortium provided the best technical solution and will deliver the project in five phases, covering a relatively small geographic area in Abu Dhabi to ensure the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.

ADIO is the Abu Dhabi central government hub responsible for managing the promotion, development and procurement of all infrastructure projects delivered through the Abu Dhabi PPP framework, in line with its mission to support private sector investment in the emirate.

DMT aims to encourage investment in Abu Dhabi through partnerships with the private sector. It works with strategic partners to promote projects related to its expertise to ensure integration and knowledge exchange.
