ABU DHABI, 3rd January, 2023 (WAM) — The Emirate of Abu Dhabi, represented by the Zayed Higher Organization of People of Resolve, ZHO, will host the People of Resolve Global Information Technology Challenge, GITC International Competition 2023, for the first time in the Middle East.
The competition aims to increase digital awareness and teach digital skills to teens with developmental disabilities.
The contest is an initiative that feeds directly into national policy to strengthen the resolve of the people initiated by the UAE government. It is in line with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s strategy for people of determination, which aspires to make Abu Dhabi an inclusive environment where people of determination have fair access and assert their rights. Competitions enable determined people to use their abilities to obtain information without the help of others. It also bridges the digital divide, which is one of the challenges of any digital transformation program targeting such determined people (people with developmental disabilities).
Abdulla Saif Al Nuaimi, UAE Ambassador to Seoul, attended the awards ceremony of the Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities 2022, and in his speech congratulated the success of the event. He highlighted the UAE’s efforts in empowering youth, especially those of determination. He expressed his delight at choosing the UAE as the first country in the Middle East to host the challenge in partnership with ZHO, and highlighted the state’s preparations to host the event next year.
In a press statement, he added that GITC is a project to bridge the digital divide among people of determination by developing IT skills and competencies. It enhances their participation in society and provides employment opportunities in various fields. He commended ZHO’s participation in this global challenge, which reflects the interest and activities of international organizations and determination to reach the highest level. “The UAE’s strategy for people of determination always seeks to empower and integrate all segments of society to realize their aspirations and expectations and provide them with a decent life,” he affirmed.
Abdullah Abdul Ali Al Humaidan, Secretary-General of the Zayed Higher Organization, welcomed the tournament’s hosting in Abu Dhabi. He said that hosting the GITC, besides the comprehensive infrastructure and basic pillars, also demonstrates the country’s status, capabilities and important success factors for various events and occasions. Given the support of wise leadership for growing businesses in multiple areas, it impresses the world every time with its superior competence and zeal to achieve the highest organizational success rates and standards.
He thanked the GITC officials for their confidence in Abu Dhabi to host the Challenge. “Hosting this challenge fulfills the vision of the UAE in general, and the vision of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to serve those of determination in general, and its efforts to build bridges of cooperation and exchange of experience with relevant authorities at the local, regional and global levels , on the development and exchange of experiences with various international agencies specializing in the issue of people of determination.”
Al Humaidan said that GITC is a project aimed at empowering these categories of youth in ICT, laying the foundations for social progress and raising their awareness of digital accessibility. The UAE will be the first country in the Middle East and Arab region to host the event.
GITC started in Korea in 1992 with the aim of bridging the digital divide for these categories of people. Since 2011, GITC has expanded to include young people of determination globally, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region, to strengthen their participation in society through access to higher education and job opportunities. In 2024, it will develop into a more sustainable event by enhancing the credibility of internationally renowned events and the independence of participating countries.
field of competition
The competition consists of six fields, and those who are determined may participate in only one field. First: Assessment of presentation writing and editing abilities; Second: Assessment of the skills required to edit data using Excel in specific situations using functions and calculations; Third: Assessment of information on the use of the international information network (Internet) to deal with problems of daily life Research and use skills; Fourth: Assessment of video production and editing skills that creatively address specific topics; Fifth: Assessment of Scratch Program skills for self-driving car simulation (coding); Sixth: Assessment of bringing life to life through information technology or basic ideas A skill more suitable for determined people.
ZHO competed in India in 2018 as one student and in Japan in 2021 as four students (remotely).
The participating countries in this competition are the Republic of China, the Philippines, India, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Kyrgyzstan, Cambodia, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates.
