ABU DHABI, 11th October, 2022 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Investment Office, ADIO, announced today that it is partnering with Siemens Energy to accelerate progress towards net-zero emissions in the UAE and globally.
Under the partnership, Siemens Energy will receive support for the establishment of a Middle East Innovation Center in Abu Dhabi as part of ADIO’s AED2 billion ($545 million) innovation program to create growth opportunities for UAE businesses.
The cooperation agreement was signed by ADIO Acting Director General Abdulla Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi and Siemens Energy Middle East Managing Director Dietmar Siersdorfer. The ceremony took place on the occasion of the visit of German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz to the UAE on 25 September, during which he witnessed the signing of the New Energy Security and Industry Accelerator Agreement, which will accelerate the energy cooperation between the UAE and Germany. Siemens Energy chose Abu Dhabi as its innovation hub in the Middle East because of the emirate’s commitment to decarbonizing the economy, becoming a global green energy hub and developing a knowledge ecosystem. The innovation centre will contribute to the UAE’s goal of producing 50GW of renewable energy by 2050 and becoming a global centre of energy excellence.
The Abu Dhabi Innovation Center is one of only four innovation centers created by Siemens Energy globally, with other locations in Orlando, USA, Shenzhen, China and Berlin, Germany. It will leverage the company’s expertise in developing sustainable, reliable and affordable clean energy technologies. It will also serve as an incubator for new startups and technologies, bringing together customers, industrial partners, academia and research centers to accelerate the commercialization of innovative solutions driving the energy transition.
The Abu Dhabi Innovation Center will be led by Dr-Ing, CTO of Siemens Energy Middle East. Fahad Alyafei’s goal is not only to develop innovative new technologies to accelerate the journey to net zero, but also to enrich the economy through Emiratisation, job creation, skills and knowledge transfer to train the next generation of innovative researchers.
Al Shamsi said: “As the UAE moves towards our net zero emissions target, we are prioritizing the development of pioneering technologies to meet the demand for sustainable energy. The partnership between ADIO and Siemens Energy will enable the Ideas and solutions to enrich the energy technology ecosystem and pave the way for the global energy transition. ADIO will continue to work with innovation-driven companies in high-impact fields to help them enter the next phase of growth.”
ADIO’s innovation program will provide financial and non-financial incentives for Siemens Energy to establish a new Middle East Customer Innovation Center in Abu Dhabi. The center furthers the company’s mission to meet the growing global demand for sustainable energy by promoting pioneering ideas and technologies that can be added to Siemens Energy’s existing products and services across the energy value chain. The innovation center will primarily focus on developing a circular carbon economy and technologies, including digital decarbonization solutions, green fuels, fuel cells, and the electrification of thermal energy and industrial processes. A substantial amount of intellectual property is expected to be developed, with the goal of promoting six industry partnerships and four Abu Dhabi University research partnerships by 2025.
In addition to supporting knowledge transfer and developing new business solutions, the centre will strengthen professional skills and create 75 high-skilled jobs in Abu Dhabi by 2025. Siemens Energy will also provide Abu Dhabi University students with at least six internships each year, 50% of which will be Emiratis.
Siersdorfer said: “To accelerate decarbonisation and achieve net-zero emissions faster, we need to leverage partnerships and innovation. As one of four global companies, the Siemens Energy Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi, in partnership with ADIO, will enable us to Leverage Abu Dhabi’s rich industrial ecosystem and partner with startups, academia, and public and private companies to develop and commercialize new technologies that will have a meaningful impact on carbon reductions.”
Siemens Energy sees Abu Dhabi as a long-term strategic partner because the emirate has access to key assets, including low-cost and reliable renewable energy, existing petrochemical infrastructure and the presence of significant non-oil logistics and heavy industries. The partnership contributes to the UAE’s net-zero emissions goal by driving the energy transition and helping Abu Dhabi entities achieve their decarbonization goals.
The launch of the innovation hub is not only in line with the goals of COP27 in Egypt in 2022, but also supports the vision of COP28 in the UAE in 2023, which aims to increase global climate action while maximizing regional and global economic benefits.
ADIO’s innovation program supports high-growth companies and helps them unlock significant business and growth opportunities in Abu Dhabi. Since its launch in 2020, the programme has allocated AED 1.3 billion to support more than 40 innovative companies from around the world.
