ABU DHABI, 13th September, 2022 (WAM) — His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Chair of the High Committee, oversees the 28th Party Preparations for the conference (COP 28) have confirmed that the UAE will lead an ambitious, inclusive and solutions-oriented approach at the 2023 Global Climate Summit.
Sheikh Abdullah stressed that the UAE will work closely with Egypt, which will host the upcoming COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh in November, to support the momentum for greater climate progress.
His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed made the statement at the fourth meeting of the COP28 UAE High Committee, which discussed all strategic, technical and administrative elements related to the landmark summit. COP 28 in the UAE will be particularly important as it will include the first global stocktake since the 2015 Paris Agreement, a comprehensive report card assessing progress towards key global climate goals.
“The UAE will use its experience as a trusted global convener to ensure that the 28th UAE Conference of the Parties reflects the voices of all relevant stakeholders to achieve a global consensus on real climate progress. The UAE will also leverage its role as a cleantech A track record of innovators, delivering solutions that are truly sustainable, maximizing social and economic benefit for all.”
The high-level committee meeting comes ahead of COP27, to be held in Egypt in November, with a global call for greater ambition and focused implementation. The UAE delegation to COP27 will remain in listening mode to better understand the different priorities of the international community. Topics dominating Egypt’s agenda include efforts to mitigate climate change, adapt to climate impacts, and the need to increase climate finance and clarify loss and damage.
Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change and Vice-Chairman of the UAE High Council at COP28, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, said the UAE leadership has directed the country’s delegation to attend COP27 in support of Egypt’s presidency and the foundation of their efforts to accelerate implementation Keep up the good work.
The UAE has always believed that incremental climate action has the potential to create new industries, new skills and lasting, sustainable economic growth. As a bridge between the Global North and the Global South, the UAE will also continue to support and emphasise the need to protect fragile states and vulnerable communities.
In line with the UAE’s commitment to inclusive representation and participation, the committee also affirmed that the UAE delegation at COP27 and its entire approach to the UAE at COP28 will include participants from the public and private sectors as well as women, youth and underrepresented communities.
The UAE High Committee for COP28 includes ministers and government officials to ensure a coordinated and integrated approach. The High Committee brings together voices from all industries and sectors at all levels in preparation for COP28 UAE.
