ABU DHABI, 14th November, 2022 (WAM) — The UAE Federal Youth Authority, FYA, in partnership with the Office of the UAE Climate Change Envoy, has announced the launch of the first round of the UAE Youth Climate Delegate Program, YCDP.
The YCDP aims to support meaningful youth engagement and upskilling to respond to the needs of diverse voices in the multilateral climate process. It aims to raise awareness of the UAE’s record on climate action and its pioneering work in tackling climate change.
Under the programme, youth participants will join the UAE’s negotiation and partnership teams at the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP), and engage in public and private sector initiatives. This will allow youth delegates to gain first-hand experience, skills and knowledge relevant to climate action.
Shamma bint Suhail Al Mazrui, Minister of State for Youth, said: “The UAE Youth Climate Representation Program reflects the vision of the UAE leadership to build a world-class model that empowers Emirati youth as ambassadors for key decisions on climate action and sustainable development of the economy and society as a whole. This program will facilitate youth participation at all levels of organization at COP28, the UAE climate conference to be hosted by the UAE in Dubai Expo City in 2023.”
Al Mazrui added: “Today, young people are role models by advocating and promoting climate action, whether in schools, research programs or the workplace. Our young people clearly demonstrate that they are passionate, knowledgeable and committed to making a difference. As. Through this project, we hope to give our young people the responsibility to contribute to the UAE’s climate goals.”
The launch of the YCDP complements the UAE’s focus on youth empowerment and dialogue to advance inclusive and ambitious climate action. This is all the more important as the country prepares to host COP28, the UAE climate conference.
Ambassador Majid Al-Suwaidi, Director General of COP28, said: “Inclusion will be key to our success in meeting the world’s climate goals. As the UAE prepares to host COP28 next year, our priority will be to put young people at the heart of the UN process and global climate action Our young people will be in the driver’s seat for the next critical decades. It is critical, now and into the future, to engage and empower them to influence the decisions being made and drive global ambition. We join We are proud of the young people in our first-ever cohort of UAE Youth Climate Representatives, and we look forward to their leadership at this critical time.”
One of the YCDP’s strategic goals is to ensure that youth views and needs are reflected in global climate policy. The program aims to build skills, competencies, knowledge and networks to support professional development and to create a legacy model for the COP’s youth inclusion process.
Registration for potential participants is now open and closes on December 16th. The program is open to all young people in the UAE, including Emiratis and residents aged 18 to 35. Candidates should have strong communication skills and demonstrable experience or accomplishments in a field or activity relevant to the environment.
