ABU DHABI, 15th December, 2022 (WAM) — Cooperation in decarbonizing the fight against climate change presents an opportunity for both countries to look forward to a hydrogen future, as growing bilateral trade figures show the strength of Germany-UAE relations , a top German diplomat told the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
“The UAE is Germany’s most important trading partner in the region, with German exports to the UAE totaling $8.4 billion [AED30.83 billion] 2021 and 2022 [first 9 months]Germany’s imports from the UAE increased by 67% year-on-year, reaching 1.3 billion US dollars [AED 4.77 billion]’, reveals the new German ambassador to the UAE, Alexander Schönfelder.
In an exclusive interview with WAM at the German embassy in Abu Dhabi, he added: “So I think these trade figures accurately show the strength of our relationship. Beyond that, I think when we talk about fighting climate change and supporting The economic relationship also holds great promise for economic growth in the area of ​​decarbonisation and as we adapt our economies to the hydrogen future we are looking for.”
Hydrogen value chain
Establishing an international hydrogen value chain is very important for both economies, he said. “This is fundamental to decarbonizing the energy sector and part of what we must achieve under the Paris climate agreement.”
The UAE-Germany cooperation is a key catalyst for accelerating the energy transition, not only facilitating the scale-up of green hydrogen production agreed by the two countries, but also creating the conditions for the large-scale export of green hydrogen from the UAE to Germany and Europe, Schönfelder explained.
“We see the UAE as a country that has the potential to become a major exporter of renewable energy to the world, and this is where Germany and other European countries want to contribute.”
The ambassador had this to say about the arrival in Hamburg of the first test shipment of hydrogen-based ammonia from the UAE to Germany in October 2022 from Aurubis AG (Aurubis). A major copper producer, Aurubis is using blue ammonia supplied by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to achieve a climate-neutral switch to energy-intensive copper rod production using low-emission ammonia.

As WAM reports, the UAE test delivery is an important step towards establishing a comprehensive hydrogen value chain between the UAE and Germany. Further ammonia test shipments will arrive in Germany later this year and will play an important role in building the future hydrogen supply chain between the two countries.
The ambassador said the initiative “also plays an important role in preparing Germany’s ports for a better hydrogen import future. So, it’s something that benefits both of us.”
Referring to the Energy Security and Industry Accelerator (ESIA) agreement signed in Abu Dhabi on September 25 during the visit of German Chancellor Olaf Schulz, the envoy said it was a joint energy and industry effort to promote projects with political support.
Regarding the signing of the agreement between the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) and the German-based Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in cooperation with the GHD Group to develop the UAE’s national hydrogen strategy, Schönfelder said that its focus on achieving climate goals further strengthens the relationship between Germany and the UAE.
