Emirates News Agency – Language lovers celebrate European Languages ​​Day in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, 27th September, 2022 (WAM) — Language lovers of all ages are celebrating European Language Day with a rich programme of cultural and language events in Abu Dhabi.

The event was organised on Sunday by the UAE’s EU National Institute for Culture Research (EUNIC), a coalition of organisations working on cultural relations, working with the EU Mission to the United Arab Emirates and various embassies of EU member states, as well as linking countries .

Held at the Francophone Alliance in Abu Dhabi, the event offers visitors a range of fun activities and challenges, including competitions, storytelling, theatrical performances, film screenings and language trivia for various giveaways and prizes. They also received information on Emirati and European language study options.

In his opening remarks, Andrea Matteo Fontana, EU Ambassador to the UAE, said: “European Languages ​​Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the various languages ​​in Europe. It reflects our linguistic diversity and is a tribute to the European Community. cultural heritage.

Learning a second or even a third language has become crucial today, especially for young people who are moving towards a more connected and digital future. We need to learn each other’s languages ​​to better communicate and foster dialogue and tolerance, which is sorely needed in our world. ”

Jiří Slavík, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the UAE, said: “The Czech Republic is the country that currently holds the EU Council Presidency. I am delighted that our embassy in Abu Dhabi is part of the European Languages ​​Day. There is a unity in EU national languages. Diversity, unity of values, similar cultural traditions, tolerance and cooperation for a better and common future of European countries. The first president of Czechoslovakia, Thomas Garrig Masaryk, once said (you said The more languages, the more human you are), which is very true.”

Participating embassies and institutions include the Delegation of the European Union to the UAE, the Goethe-Institut Gulf, the Italian Cultural Institute in Abu Dhabi, the Institut Française in the UAE, and the embassies of Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, Austria, Estonia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Poland and Switzerland.

Initiated by the European Commission in 2001 and celebrated annually on 26 September, European Languages ​​Day aims to encourage lifelong language learning and raise awareness of the importance of language learning in enhancing cross-cultural understanding while promoting rich linguistic and cultural diversity Sexual awareness. Europe.

There are more than 200 languages ​​in Europe, and many more are spoken by citizens whose families come from other continents.
