ABU DHABI, 16th May, 2023 (WAM) — Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, Masdar, has signed an agreement with Airbus to support the development and growth of the global sustainable aviation fuel market.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar and Chairman-elect of COP28, Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.
The agreement was signed by Masdar Chief Green Hydrogen Officer Mohammad Abdelkader El Ramahi and Airbus Africa and Middle East President Mikael Houari.
The agreement highlights areas of collaboration between the two companies, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), green hydrogen and direct air capture technologies, as well as supporting the development and implementation of “book and claim” solutions.
Direct air capture technology captures atmospheric CO2, which can be combined with hydrogen to produce synthetic SAF. Using SAF based on green hydrogen and direct air capture is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional jet fuel, with the global market for sustainable aviation fuel expected to grow to more than $14 billion by 2032, according to Prioritize research.

Sustainable aviation fuel is a ready-to-use solution that can significantly reduce CO2 emissions from global air transport. It can be used as a direct fuel without modifying existing storage and refueling infrastructure, aircraft or engines. It is estimated that a global phase-in of this fuel will go a long way toward reducing air transport’s CO2 emissions and is key to a net-zero future for the global aviation industry.
Earlier this year, during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Masdar also announced that a Masdar-led initiative focused on the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from green hydrogen is actively working with licensors to A new production pathway for certifying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
