ABU DHABI, 25th September, 2022 (WAM) — The Ministry of Culture and Youth has announced that three artists will participate in the 16th Biennale of Contemporary Art in Lyon, which will take place from 14th September to 31st December, 2022.

The ministry is working with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) to support Emirati artists in an exhibition themed “Manifesto of Fragility”.

Multidisciplinary artist Hashel Al Lamki, conceptual artist Mohammed Kazem and mural artist Chafa Ghaddar represented the UAE at the Biennale, presenting their interpretations of the fragility and impermanence of the world around them.

Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, the 16th Lyon Biennale brings together works of art that span history, geography and socio-political fields. According to the curators, the exhibition “represents a different understanding of our current state of global uncertainty”.

Noura Bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth, said: “This is a great opportunity for the UAE to showcase its talents on such a prestigious platform. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “The artists representing the UAE at the 16th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art continue a proud tradition of sharing our culture with the world, while exploring how our influence reflects when we communicate with people from around the world. culture in other places and the themes of this art platform.”

Featuring 230 artworks by 34 artists and more than 300 archival documents from nearly 40 collections around the world, the exhibition will showcase new works by living artists as well as historical works from the French city museum. It will also showcase collections and collections on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (also known as the Metropolitan) in New York, the Rijksmuseum in Dresden, and many of Lyon’s leading cultural institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, the Musée du Luguet The Roman Theatre, and the Gadagne Museum.

The Biennale is structured along two distinct axes, a horizontal line that hosts the contributions of 87 contemporary artists from 39 countries, and a vertical timeline that includes hundreds of historical artworks and objects spanning two millennia It was borrowed from several different collections in Lyon and abroad. The intersection of the two axes focuses on Beirut’s so-called Golden Age in the 1960s, highlighting Lyon’s historical entanglement with Beirut. The Biennale is spread over several venues in the city of Lyon, with more than 50 site-specific commissions.
