Emirates News Agency – Ministry of Health – Abu Dhabi strengthens sector’s readiness to face cyber challenges

ABU DHABI, 23rd December, 2022 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Department of Health, DoH, the regulator of the healthcare sector in the emirate, identified different risk scenarios and helped healthcare Entities prepare to address cyber threats in Abu Dhabi by evaluating the effectiveness of entity incident response and communications plans with the help of simulated cyber incident response scenarios.

Held recently in Abu Dhabi, the first of its kind in the region, the conference was organized in partnership with the Cyber ​​Security Council and saw the participation of more than 370 entities representing 10 of Abu Dhabi’s largest healthcare groups. The cyber wargaming session focused on assessing the sector’s readiness to address cyber challenges and developing recommendations and best practices to ensure sector readiness and continuity of care.

At the event, the Ministry of Health showcased its efforts in digitizing healthcare services and highlighted the importance of having a high level of data protection to safeguard all patient data and sensitive information. Additionally, it covers simulations of the Department’s Medical Operations Command (MOC) ‘Information Sharing’ and ‘Patient Transfer Modules’ in the Estijabah platform. This module is used to evacuate patients from one healthcare facility to another to ensure uninterrupted patient care.

Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Deputy Minister of Health, Abu Dhabi (DoH), said: Creating a world-leading innovative system through digital services aims to improve the quality of healthcare for the residents of Abu Dhabi and the region. Therefore, we understand that advances in technology require us to provide the highest level of protection for our patients’ privacy. Today’s event creates an opportunity to explore and discuss all possible solutions to cyber incidents in line with international standards and best practice, as we continue our efforts to leverage digital health technologies to improve the patient experience and deliver world-class healthcare . “

Mohammed Hamad Al-Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber ​​Security at the UAE Government, applauded the Abu Dhabi Department of Health for adopting innovative digital services to improve healthcare and increase capacity to address cyber challenges.

He said the Cyber ​​Security Committee was pleased to participate in the Healthcare Shield Wargaming meeting organized by the Abu Dhabi Department of Health. He added that the efforts are designed to help protect data and improve the skills of the workforce in terms of digital security and their ability to deal with any challenges related to data and patient records.

He noted that the Cyber ​​Security Council is building a secure and resilient infrastructure for cyber security in the UAE and promoting a culture of cyber security among institutions and individuals. He explained that the Cyber ​​Security Council embodies the forward-looking vision of the UAE leadership and the country’s proactive approach to the various challenges posed by fast-paced digital technologies.

Abdulla Bader Al Sayari, Director of the DoH Office of Information and Cyber ​​Security, added: “With the rapidly evolving digital world, digitally transmitting health information and maintaining patient records becomes a responsibility for all of us. As such, the Department of Health has launched the “ Malaffi”, providing patients with convenient and secure access to their medical records. In addition, we launched the “AAMEN” audit program, which aims to ensure that all medical institutions in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi comply with information security and data privacy standards, and Giving it the support it needs to achieve world-class patient data privacy, ensuring the confidentiality, accuracy and accessibility of different forms of health information.”

The healthcare industry is a frequent target of cyberattacks due to the sensitivity of the information, which is often sold and used for identity theft. As such, the Cyber ​​Security Council joined forces with the Abu Dhabi Department of Health to identify risk scenarios and prepare healthcare entities to respond to evolving cyber threats.

The event ensured robust knowledge transfer and a deeper understanding of the technical, political, strategic, and legal context for this cybersecurity, while also assessing the facility’s ability to coordinate and deliver uninterrupted care.

DoH is the first entity in the region to develop a healthcare information security strategy. This is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the information infrastructure of the healthcare industry. The strategy helps create a cohesive and proactive response framework to address current and future healthcare cybersecurity challenges in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, while enabling the adoption of technology, innovation and artificial intelligence in the emirate’s healthcare sector, Continue to focus on digital transformation.
