ABU DHABI, 23rd September, 2022 (WAM) — The UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Organization for Standardization to foster growth in the UAE economy, and further develop national standards for health, safety and the environment.

MoIAT Deputy Minister Omar Al Suwaidi and ASTM Vice President of Global Partnerships Teresa Cendrowska signed the MoU at the ISO 2022 annual meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Under the MoU, the two entities will strengthen their relationship to facilitate communication between the two organizations; avoid duplication of efforts wherever possible; promote understanding of each organization’s standards development activities; leverage ASTM International’s resources to enhance MoIAT’s standards system; And promote MoIAT to adopt ASTM international standards.

The MoU is in line with the ministry’s efforts to collaborate with global partners in the field of standardization as part of its work to align with international standards and best practices.

Al Suwaidi said: “We are delighted to sign this MoU with ASTM International as a means to support MoIAT’s efforts to improve quality infrastructure, improve compliance and align with international standards to enhance the UAE’s competitiveness. By harmonizing national standards with International best standard practice, MoIAT will continue to drive innovation, ensure the adoption of advanced technologies, and develop quality infrastructure in line with our country’s national industrial strategy.”

For her part, Cendrowska commented, “This MoU highlights the mutually beneficial relationships ASTM International has built over the years with standards bodies in the UAE and the GCC region, which is why ASTM opened its first international chapter in the UAE in 2019.”

Earlier this week, MoIAT signed a separate memorandum of understanding with the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) aimed at facilitating global trade. Trade and sustainability are key themes explored at ISO’s 2022 annual meeting, which is ‘Partnering for Good’.

More than 5,000 delegates from 163 countries, including officials and representatives of national standardization bodies, as well as experts and technicians, will participate in the event, which will run until Friday.

Holding the meeting in the UAE, which is a member of the ISO Council, reflects the country’s global leadership in standardization. It also highlights the UAE’s position as a globally recognized and established industrial hub, offering international investors attractive industrial opportunities and a unique value proposition.
