ABU DHABI, 2nd May, 2023 (WAM) — New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), in partnership with Tamkeen, has concluded the 11th edition of the NYUAD Arab World Social Good Hackathon, which leverages quantum computing to find innovative solutions and Challenges related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The final day of the three-day hackathon was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NYU and the Geneva Anticipation Foundation for Science and Diplomacy (GESDA).
As part of a long-term strategic partnership with NYUAD, GESDA will present the Open Quantum Institute Award to top winners, which provides access to mentorship, industry networking opportunities, academic research, and an open invitation to participate in the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Expectations The summit will take place from October 11-13, 2023.
Additionally, GESDA announced that they will be inviting the first place winners to present their projects to diplomats, UN leaders, scientists and more at the GESDA Summit in Geneva in October. Additionally, they will network with quantum investors, business leaders and scientists who will help further mature their ideas and accelerate their real-world implementation.
Sana Odeh, an NYU-affiliated faculty member and clinical professor of computer science who organized the event, commented, “Eleven years ago, we founded the NYU International Hackathon for Social Good because of our belief that technology could help society. Quantum computing has the potential to transform many fields , but the biggest area where it can help is addressing our biggest challenges: climate change and the need for a more sustainable future.
“The purpose of the hackathon was to use this powerful technology specifically for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This allowed our participating students from all over the world to really focus their talents and energy, and I was once again humbled by the results. “
First, the Smart Current team uses quantum computing to manage the grid by providing automatic real-time power flow corrections. Winning projects focus on avoiding and mitigating grid outages with affordable and clean energy.
In second place is the QatraH team, which focuses on clean water, sanitation, industry innovation and infrastructure. The QatraH team used quantum computing to design a more accurate, greener and more robust water distribution network.
In third place, the feeQra team and its project Qure devised a solution to help medical professionals detect early signs of malignancy in patients using quantum machine learning.
Attendees explored quantum computing solutions to solve problems ranging from machine learning and artificial intelligence to physics (complex simulation problems), chemistry, computer science, healthcare, mathematics, online gaming, security, social sciences and art (quantum-generated artwork ) and a series of challenging projects).
Experts from world-leading institutions such as ETH, MIT, and Stanford University provide sponsorship and mentorship to students, sharing their experiences and insights into the fields of technology start-ups and academic research.
The NYU Social Good Hackathon is supported by the world’s top quantum computing experts from industry and academia, such as the NYU Center for Quantum and Topological Systems; the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the Geneva Institute for Science and Diplomacy (GESDA), Zurich ETH, EPFL, University of Calgary’s Institute for Quantum Science and Technology (IQST), MIT’s iQuHACK, QWorld, and experts from world-class companies including IBM, qBraid, and NIEW.
