ABU DHABI, 8th April, 2023 (WAM) – Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) A media campaign was launched to raise awareness of Onwani systemAbu Dhabi’s unified space addressing system.
The innovative platform uses advanced technologies such as geographic information systems and quick response (QR) code services to create efficient access and navigation to different destinations across the emirate.
According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office (ADMO), the campaign is being implemented in multiple languages to reach different segments of Abu Dhabi society. The aim is to educate people on how to use Onwani to access any address in Abu Dhabi, and the unique advantages it offers, ultimately encouraging more community members to adopt it. The campaign features a series of short films telling the stories behind the meanings behind the emirate’s street names.
The streets are named after elements inspired by authentic Emirati tradition and culture, as well as illustrious personalities, to introduce national identity and local heritage to present and future generations, while strengthening their connection to Emirati history and heritage.
Onwani is dedicated to facilitating the efficient and effective travel of individuals, businesses and tourists to any destination or location in Abu Dhabi. This was achieved by numbering buildings and naming streets in different parts of Abu Dhabi, using unique numbers for buildings and facilities, and unique names for streets that reflect the identity of the UAE.
The importance of the system lies in the many benefits it brings to individuals, businesses and society. The system helps to save time and help get to the desired location faster, helping to reduce the vehicle’s carbon footprint and protect the environment. The system also helps to enhance logistics services and assist in the timely and accurate delivery of goods and services.
Additional benefits include faster emergency response times and enhanced business planning and management processes by providing accurate information.
The Onwani system was developed to meet global best practices in addressing and space guidance, helping to improve the quality of life in the emirate. It will also boost the national economy by facilitating the movement of individuals and enhancing the movement of goods and merchandise across the emirate.
The system is an important milestone and a step forward for Abu Dhabi’s sustainable development, strengthening the infrastructure and having a long-term positive impact.
Dr Salem Khalfan Al Kaabi, Director General of Operational Affairs, Ministry of Municipalities and Transport, said: “The innovative solution provided by Onwani can bring about a qualitative shift in the way traffic and navigation are conducted in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. It will have diverse and supportive national economies and strengthen the The long-term positive impact of the emirate’s place on the innovative and smart city map.Through this innovative system equipped with advanced technology, residents of the emirate will be able to navigate and discover different places and destinations in Abu Dhabi easier and more economically than ever hour.

The Ministry of Municipalities and Transport, in coordination with government and private sector partners, held a workshop on the use of Onwani in a unified address system for logistics services.
