ABU DHABI, 20th December, 2022 (WAM) — The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) ‘Enviro-Spellathon’ app has been downloaded 6,100 times since August.

The Enviro-Spellathon is an annual EAD-led event held in schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The program promotes ecological literacy of local flora and fauna through structured academic activities and instils awareness of local environmental issues in Abu Dhabi students. The activity is designed for students aged 5 to 13 (Kindergarten to Grade 6) and is available in Arabic and English.

Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director, Environmental Information, Science and Outreach Management, said: “Since its launch, 8 million students from 92% of Abu Dhabi’s schools have taken the environmental spellathon as an extra-curricular activity. Since summer we have witnessed an unprecedented enviro-spellathon downloads — now over 6,100. We believe this growth is due to our social media outreach to parents, encouraging them to complete a spelling marathon with their kids over the summer to keep students engaged and entertained.”

He added: “This new app has replaced the need for printed materials that were previously used for the program. As a result, not only have we provided a great learning experience for our students, we have also reduced our CO2 emissions from printing and shipping brochures The app will further enhance environmental literacy for our students as it becomes more interactive, including animations, games, sounds, voice-overs, and more.”
An ongoing program since 2001, Enviro-Spellathon offers other significant advantages as children develop, including: targeting the entire student body in a structured way, and improving language and vocabulary while Ecological literacy skills. The app also instills good environmental behavior and ethics in young people, which will help build a more sustainable world in the future.

The app includes 18 games, 12 animations, 9 interactive animations and voiceovers throughout each book. Another noteworthy feature is that no internet connection is required – once downloaded to the appropriate device (desktop/tablet/iPad), students can use it anytime, anywhere.

The envoi-spellathon has a live test section and after each level is completed, students are encouraged to test their knowledge and take the test. Live tests are administered automatically, results are emailed to relevant teachers and a series of certificates are awarded for successful completion of each level.
