ABU DHABI, 30th August, 2022 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) has hosted its inaugural Publishing Industry Forum for the UAE Publishers Association at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi.
The forum is designed to support the promotion of Arabic and efforts to create Arabic content. It showcases local and international ALC publishing projects and their initiatives to support publishers in the UAE.
Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of ALC, Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Acting Executive Director of ALC, and Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of UAE Publishers Association, and 50 publishers, literary institutions, copyright trade professionals specializing in children’s and young people’s literature, e-books and audiobooks and translators, as well as representatives of ALC departments.
Al Tunaiji said: “In recent years, the publishing industry has faced many challenges that require the mobilization of stakeholders and relevant sectors to clearly outline the future of the industry. The Abu Dhabi Arabic Centre is committed to developing systems for the local and local publishing industry. International level, supporting writers and publishers and promoting their works in the global market. The Publishing Industry Forum with the UAE Publishers Association is a continuation of these efforts and helps to enhance communication among industry players for the benefit of Stakeholders are able to stay on top of developments and respond to any challenges that may arise.”
Rashid Al Kous said: “This forum provides a meaningful new opportunity for the global publisher community to make proposals that they believe will drive the modern technology adoption necessary to continue to grow and advance our industry. From our Forum participants in the region can leverage and customize recommendations to benefit their business while diversifying their content into ebook and audiobook formats, especially in the kids and teen genre, as these have become linked to translation, book marketing , exhibitions and festivals together with the central discussion topic.
“Arabic will always be the primary medium for communicating our deep-rooted historical and cultural identities, as well as the protectors of our identities for future generations. It is therefore impossible to overstate the role that Emirati and Arab publishers have played in achieving these goals. Through their contributions, they are transforming the local and regional publishing industry into an inclusive cultural ecosystem that continuously promotes Arabic readers to learn in their native language.”
The forum assessed the current state of the publishing industry in the UAE and the challenges it faces, articulating the aspirations of publishers and their proposed solutions to industry-wide issues. The event highlighted the role of book fairs and their impact on the industry, with attendees exploring ways to improve the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2023 professional programme and discussing the future of the Al Dhafra Book Fair.
Other topics of discussion include modern marketing mechanisms and various channels for print, digital and audio publications. The Forum also highlighted the outcomes of the first Arab International Conference on Publishing and Creative Industries, as well as the success of ALC’s regular participation in various international book fairs.
