Emirates News Agency – TDRA launches UAE Hackathon 6.0

ABU DHABI, 31st January, 2023 (WAM) — The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, TDRA, has announced the launch of the 6th edition of the UAE Hackathon, with a new motto of “Today’s Challenges…Tomorrow’s Solutions”.

This was released during a press conference held by the authorities this morning, attended by representatives of numerous federal and local government entities, state universities, business incubators and media.

The hands-on phase of the UAE Hackathon 6.0 starts at the end of January, with the submission and registration phase, followed by a second phase, which contains intensive training of the teams based on the The positions of the country’s seven emirates are divided and the top three teams are selected from each emirate.

Commenting on the UAE Hackathon 6.0, Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, Director General of TDRA, said: “The UAE Hackathon is an important annual event in the field of innovation. The future we envision is in line with the direction of the UAE and its wise leadership.”

Al Mesmar added: “As always, the UAE Hackathon is a collaborative effort and we are always keen to strengthen this collaboration. We thank the participating entities for their dedication and tireless efforts to make this annual event a success, which has To be synonymous with innovations, ideas and projects that simulate the needs of the future.”

Al Mesmar emphasized that today’s successful solutions are the result of innovative and creative thinking. There is nothing like the environment of a hackathon to generate and discuss ideas and turn them into projects that can be implemented in a realistic way.

The hackathon is held in consecutive editions until the beginning of March, with a closing ceremony on March 7th which includes the announcement of the top 3 winners in each emirate as well as the hackathon champion.

The UAE Hackathon 2023 will feature several developments. This year, the winning ideas will be transferred to participating national university business incubators, who will sponsor idea owners and train them to turn their ideas into real projects. Additionally, for the first time, a portion of the hackathon-related activities will be used to encourage applied research, with a prize of AED 100,000 allocated for winning research in the hackathon field and challenge.

UAE Hackathon 6.0 includes a “tracks” system to help all participating teams achieve their best results. These include a track for current students aged 11-18 who are not in college, a track for college students aged 18-25 or slightly older without long-term professional experience, and a track for startups and entrepreneurs for experts in various fields with strong technical expertise, making them Ability to develop high-quality and implementable solutions.

The UAE Hackathon 5.0 (2022) report shows outstanding results using 2,633 datasets and developing over 30 inspiring ideas and 100 actionable ideas. The UAE Maker Marathon 5.0 has 2,162 participants, 254 teams, 46 mentors, 22 coaches, and 23 judges. The proportion of women reached 57%, and that of men reached 43%.

The UAE Hackathon embodies what it means to collaborate and work together between government, academia, companies and members of society. It is organized by TDRA in strategic partnership with government entities, national universities and the private sector to emphasize that a culture of innovation is an integral part of the UAE’s capacity-building process.
