NEW YORK, 5th July, 2023 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates concluded its second term as the UN Security Council presidency, adopting seven resolutions including a landmark resolution on tolerance and international peace and security .
The Tolerance Resolution, co-authored by the UAE and the UK and adopted unanimously on June 14, recognizes for the first time that hate speech, racism and extremism can lead to the outbreak, escalation and recurrence of conflict. During the UAE’s presidency, the Council achieved a total of 14 agreed outcomes, including 7 resolutions, 5 press statements and 2 press elements.
During its second presidency of the Council for 2022-2023, the UAE organized three signature events on its presidency priorities, bringing the Council’s attention to important issues related to the maintenance of international peace and security. The meeting, chaired by Minister of State Noura Kabi, discussed the value of human brotherhood in promoting and sustaining peace; climate change, peace and security, chaired by Minister of Climate Change and Environment Mariam Almheiri; and between the United Nations and the League of Arab States The cooperation, chaired by Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Malal.
Minister of State Sheikh Shahbout Al Nahyan also chaired the Somali briefing, at which the President of Somalia addressed the Council.
“The UN Security Council continues to face a dizzying array of complex, multifaceted challenges – from protracted wars and conflicts, to delicate, long-term post-conflict reconstruction, to the paradigm-shifting impact of climate change on lives and livelihoods around the world. In June, the UN Security Council passed a resolution extending the mandates of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, the African Union Mission in Somalia and the UN Disengagement Observer Force. It passed resolutions extending the 1533 sanctions regime on the Democratic Republic of Congo and authorizing inspections of ships off the coast of Libya. The Security Council also adopted a resolution authorizing a six-month drawdown of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali in response to the Mali government’s demand for MINUSMA to withdraw its troops.
The Council issued five press statements and read two press kits in June. Press statements were issued on the Sudan, Somalia, the attack on the air traffic management system in Somalia, the attack on MINUSMA in Mali, and the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In his capacity as Chairman, Ambassador Nusseibeh read to the press the main points concerning the situation in Sudan and the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.
As a signatory to the Statement of Shared Commitments on Women, Peace and Security, the UAE encourages all briefers to include relevant gender analysis in their briefings. Furthermore, in line with the Joint Climate, Peace and Security Commitment, the UAE encourages all briefers, including UN and regional representatives, to highlight relevant climate change analysis throughout their briefings throughout the month.
Ten civil society briefers provided valuable insight at Council meetings throughout the month. As part of the UAE’s commitment to accessibility, international sign language interpretation and closed captioning are provided during select sessions. For the first time, ISI is available for the entire council meeting, not just for attendees of a specific meeting.
