Given the continuing economic, ecological and social challenges, there is an increasing need to develop more sustainable, fast, flexible and efficient transportation systems. During the meeting, the UAE Minister held a meeting with Rashid Meredov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Mamet Khan Chakiyev, Director of the Transport and Communications Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, and the Iranian Ministry of Transport and Urban Development A series of separate meetings was held with Minister Rostam Kasemi and representatives of some participating governments. The meeting discussed ways to further develop bilateral cooperation in the field of transport.

Ministers and heads of transport agencies from more than 30 countries, as well as delegations from dozens of international organizations, financial institutions and expert circles attended the meeting.

In accordance with the Vienna Programme of Action, the Government of Turkmenistan, together with the Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), organized the Ministerial Conference on Transport for Landlocked Developing Countries (VPOA) .

The meeting is part of the preparatory process for the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries to be held in 2024.

Under the theme “The Ashgabat Process: Financing Better Connectivity”, transport ministers from landlocked developing countries have come together to tackle the challenge of accelerating transport infrastructure. Achieving the global average density of railways and paved roads requires the construction of more than 46,000 kilometers of railways and nearly 200,000 kilometers of paved roads.

Ministers at the meeting called for greater cooperation in capacity building, data use, road safety, developing bankable infrastructure projects, and increasing the use of information and communication technologies in transport systems.

The international community urgently mobilizes investment, technology and capacity-building for sustainable transport and uses pandemic recovery funds to develop physical infrastructure for sustainable transport in landlocked developing countries and transit countries.

Utilize all available sources, in particular development partners, international and regional financial institutions and private sector investment and financing in transport infrastructure in landlocked developing countries.

Increase investment and partnerships in climate-resilient infrastructure and improve the sustainability and resilience of transport systems in landlocked developing and transit countries.
