MANAMA, 11th March, 2023 (WAM) — The UAE’s parliamentary sector participated today in the 35th Forum of Women Parliamentarians meeting, held on the sidelines of the 146th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU, and related meetings in Bahrain.
Sarah Falaknaz, Rapporteur of the IPU Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, introduced the draft resolution entitled “Cyberattacks and Cybercrime: Emerging Risks to Global Security” for discussion.

Taking into account the continued increase in such acts against citizens, vulnerable groups, institutions, governments or countries, and their links to fundamental freedoms such as privacy and liberty, the draft resolution calls on parliaments to enact new legislation and a new international cooperative effort to Combating cybercrime and cyberattacks on the right to expression, the fact that they must not infringe or diminish the ability of citizens to enjoy these freedoms, and their implications for international peace and security and global economic stability.
It encourages parliaments to support UN efforts to develop a new convention on cybercrime as a means of strengthening national legislation and increasing international cooperation to combat cybercrime and cyberattacks; and calls on parliaments to make full use of their oversight tools to ensure government control of cyber The rapid growth of crime, taking into account the privacy of cyberspace users. It also calls on the IPU Secretariat to play an important role in helping parliaments build capacity by organizing dedicated seminars, workshops and conferences to help understand and respond to the complex and rapidly changing nature of cybercrime and cyberattacks.
Participants will also discuss the gender perspective of the draft resolution and make recommendations for gender-related amendments.
