Emirates News Agency – UAE participates in 2nd meeting of Development Working Group 2023

KERALA, India, 20th April, 2023 (WAM) — The UAE participated in the second meeting of the G20 Development Working Group 2023, chaired by the Republic of India, in Kumarakom, Kerala ,India.

The meeting discussed two drafts of action plans focused on efforts to accelerate progress on the SDGs, as well as discussions and proposals by countries on the direction of the group in light of India’s G20 presidency priorities.

The UAE team participating in the meeting included Rashed Al Hemeiri, Director-General, Foreign Aid Affairs Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Dr. Kamal Al Yammahi, Development Cooperation Division. The meeting was attended by G20 members and invited countries, G20-affiliated partners, and representatives of many international organizations specializing in international development.

On the first day, the UAE delegation participated in a session on Data for Development and Women’s Participation and “Green” Development, examining capacity-building mechanisms in areas where data is used to serve the development goals of developing countries. India’s vision of the G20 Presidency to empower women and girls to reach their full potential was also discussed, discussing shifting the ‘women’s development’ narrative to ‘women-led development’ and the most important challenges facing women. Discuss the transformation of developing countries.

The UAE delegation also participated in a session on sustainable development, coordination and partnerships on the second day. The session included a presentation on the Green Development Convention, which supports risk reduction in developing countries, including sustainable consumption, climate change adaptation, carbon footprint reduction, industrialization and decarbonization. The second day also called for international agencies such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs to assess the G20’s success in responding to the crisis over the past few years.

During the meeting, the UAE delegation highlighted the importance of considering differences in rural and urban settings, as well as different social and economic contexts, when addressing action plans related to women’s development, bridging gender gaps, and initiating more discussions on financing action plans and private sector departmental participation. The UAE delegation also highlighted their experience in providing assistance to developing countries in the field of clean energy and showed how successful projects are implemented, especially in terms of financing, and how any challenges can be overcome.

The meeting also called on countries to seize the opportunity presented by the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), the world’s largest gathering of heads of state, government and stakeholders on climate change, to be hosted by the UAE this November. and environmental issues. COP28 seeks solutions to climate challenges, where the G20 summit will present its outcomes related to climate change and its impact on development.
