ABU DHABI, 14th May, 2023 (WAM) — The UAE is ready to host a new edition of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam 2023 from 24th to 26th October, after the end of COVID-19, a senior UAE sports official has announced.

“I think this bodes well for the future and I am looking forward to more global events in the region. I am sure that will be the case. It will be a great boost for our new generation and future generations. They can follow Their heroes,” Naser Al Tamimi, secretary-general of the UAE Judo Federation and chief financial officer of the International Judo Federation (IJF), told the IFJ website and TV channel. He assessed the current championships and the development of judo in the Bay Area.

Altamimi said: “In Abu Dhabi we have been organizing Grand Prix for many years and then Grand Slams. We also have Junior World Championships, Veterans Championships and Kata World Championships. The popularity of the sport, the sport is becoming more and more popular. Judo is the top sport in the Olympic Games in our country. Thanks to this, we have more support from the government.”

Al Tamimi has been the IJF General Treasurer since 2007 and he has just been re-elected, at the Congress which preceded the World Judo Championships – Doha 2023.

”Year after year, I can feel the interest in judo grows. So in Qatar, I feel right at home and I’m happy to see the level of organization. I think what we did in Abu Dhabi contributed a lot to the success of this World Championship. What we see here is one of the top competitions in terms of organization. The level of judo is also ridiculously high.

Talking about his impressions of the sport, he said: “When I was introduced to judo, I started practicing because I wanted to know and understand the rules, principles and values. I quickly understood that judo teaches discipline and respect, and it helps us of young people are more focused and have better behaviour. That’s why in 2005 we already started implementing Judo in schools and we continue to develop the educational dimension of the sport.

Really, he added, falling in love with judo is easy. You just have to watch and enjoy its beauty. It is pure. Having two athletes, one in white and one in blue, playing great technique and competing fairly and with respect is what our world needs. It’s attractive.
