ABU DHABI, 9th June, 2023 (WAM) — With the support of the leaders of both countries, the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Turkey continue their steadfast efforts to strengthen their bilateral relations.

The UAE-Turkey relationship affirms their importance in driving the overall development of the two countries, offering opportunities for the region to prosper and achieve peace and stability for its people.

The relationship with Turkey is very important to the UAE, stemming from its strategy of strengthening partnerships and expanding relations with various friendly countries. Given the latter’s regional and global influence and importance, the UAE is strengthening its bridge of cooperation with Turkey in various fields.

Official visits and meetings between the leaders of the two countries reflect the depth of the UAE-Turkey relationship. President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Turkey on November 24, 2021, while President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan on February 2022 Visited the UAE on the 14th. In addition, the two presidents held a remote summit last March, during which they witnessed the signing ceremony of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the UAE and Turkey.

The ongoing visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed to the Republic of Turkey marks a new stage in the process of consolidating bilateral relations between the two countries based on mutual understanding and respect, as the two countries are advancing plans to strengthen joint cooperation in various fields .

The UAE leader’s official visit to Turkey has been highly appreciated by officials and the public alike. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s historic visit to Turkey in 1984 was met with unparalleled hospitality. The media at the time gave the visit its due attention, with details of it making the front pages of Turkey’s leading newspapers.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries on April 1, 1977, the relationship between the UAE and Turkey has achieved considerable development, especially with the establishment of the Turkish Embassy in Abu Dhabi in 1979, the UAE Embassy in Ankara in 1983, and the UAE General Assembly in Istanbul in 1989. The UAE and the Republic of Turkey have signed dozens of strategic agreements and memorandums of understanding to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, security, environment, technology and more.

On November 24, 2021, the two countries signed a number of agreements and memorandums of understanding, including a memorandum of understanding between the UAE’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and Turkey’s Financial Crimes Investigative Board (MASAK); Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) Cooperation agreement with Turkey Wealth Fund (TWF); Cooperation agreement between Abu Dhabi Holding Company and TWF; Cooperation agreement between Abu Dhabi Holding Company and Turkish Investment Authority; Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) An MoU with the Istanbul Stock Exchange; a MoU on information exchange in the banking sector between the Central Bank of the UAE and the Central Bank of Turkey; a joint administrative cooperation agreement between the UAE and Turkey on customs affairs; a MoU in the energy sector; and a MoU in the environment sector.

On February 14, 2022, the two countries witnessed the exchange of 13 cooperation agreements, memorandums of understanding and protocols aimed at strengthening cooperation and partnership between the two countries in various fields such as investment, health, agriculture, transportation, industry, advanced technology , climate action, culture, youth and more.

The economic aspect is one of the most important pillars of the growing cooperation between the two countries, as the strong economic relationship between the UAE and Turkey dates back to the establishment of the UAE and has continued to grow over the years.

In 1984, the two countries signed an economic and technological cooperation agreement, followed by a number of agreements to strengthen economic and trade cooperation, and signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in March last year. CEPA is expected to help increase non-oil internal trade to $40 billion within five years, create 25,000 new jobs by 2031, and increase UAE exports to Turkey by 21.7%.

In 2022, the total non-oil trade between the UAE and Turkey will reach nearly $19 billion, a 40% increase from 2021 and a 112% increase from 2020, making Turkey the fastest growing partner among the UAE’s top 10 trading partners.

In November 2021, the UAE announced the establishment of a US$10 billion investment fund in Turkey, focusing on strategic investments, especially in logistics such as energy, health and food.

Following the earthquake in Syria and Turkey on February 5, 2023, the UAE launched Operation Valiant Rider 2, reflecting the strong relationship between the UAE and Turkey, sending medical, rescue and food supplies, research teams and vehicles equipped with debris removal equipment, medical teams and set up a field hospital in Israhiye and Hatay, Gaziantep province, to treat the wounded.

On April 27, President Erdogan awarded the National Medal of Sacrifice to the “Operation Rider 2” team in recognition of the UAE’s efforts in search and rescue efforts in the earthquake-stricken area.

culture

The cultural relationship between the UAE and Turkey is built on their rich and inspiring cultural history and literary tradition. To strengthen these ties, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation in February 2022.

Recently, the two countries have witnessed increasing cultural cooperation, as evidenced by Turkey’s participation as the country of honor at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair in 2023, as well as Turkey’s strong presence during Expo 2020 Dubai.

In addition, the UAE Publishers Association participated in the 7th Istanbul Arabic International Book Fair last October, exhibiting 284 works representing 31 UAE publishing houses.
