Emirates News Agency – World jiu-jitsu players return to Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi Grand Slam final

ABU DHABI, 3rd May, 2023 (WAM) — The greatest stars of international Jiu-Jitsu are returning to the sport’s most coveted center on the planet, Abu Dhabi, the capital of Jiu-Jitsu.
The final leg of the 2022-2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour (ADGS – Abu Dhabi) will be held at the Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City from 5-7 May.

The tournament offers a total of $1,525,000 in prize money for the first place finisher of the season. After visiting Rio de Janeiro, Miami, Sydney and London, ADGS will complete its season finale in the UAE capital.

Jointly organized by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) and Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP), the event is open to players from clubs and academies around the world.
The tournament will feature children and youth divisions competing on mats on day one, masters on day two and professional on day three.

The event received an overwhelming response, with registrations increasing over the three-day period.

Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice-President of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: “The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam is one of the most prestigious Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world and one of the few events held in a major event in the nation’s capital. and city.

“The fact that this round of the tournament will be held in the UAE capital will further cement Abu Dhabi’s status as a world championship destination,” Al Dhaheri added.

According to Al Dhaheri, UAE players have achieved notable success in recent years, including their remarkable achievement of winning the Asian Championships for three consecutive years. He noted that the players’ participation and experience on the Grand Slam Tour in Abu Dhabi has greatly facilitated their ability to improve their skills and hone their performances in major international tournaments.

“The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam is considered one of the most important events in the annual AJP calendar as it awards 3,000 points to the first place winner, which will help them qualify for the prestigious Abu Dhabi World Joker technical award,” said Tariq Al-Bahri, director-general of the AJP.

“These tours serve as a platform to bring together various athletes from around the world to engage in intense competition and share experiences. Jiu-Jitsu is a sport that brings people together and shortens distances and Abu Dhabi continues to play an important role role, to provide a perfect venue for athletes across the globe to network with each other, develop and promote the sport, in keeping with its reputation as the best jujitsu capital in the world,” he added.

Elsewhere, Tácio Carneiro, a black belt from the Vision BJJ Academy who competes professionally in the sub-120kg category, said: “I always make sure to go to all the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour events and I schedule my The schedule ensures I never miss their way. My aim is to get as many ranking points as possible in Abu Dhabi.”

Among the most popular athletes, the leaders of the 2021-2022 rankings, Lucas Protásio and Julia Alves, have already secured their places in the event. In order to repeat their feat in 2022-2023 season, they will have to overcome other heavyweight batsmen who are interested in the title, such as Youri Hendrex, Zayed Al Qaserri, Alexa Yanez, Ross Sharouni, Catriel Oliveira, U Anderson Ferreira, Thiago Macedo, Hiago George, Ingridd Alves, Leonardo Mario, Renato Cardoso and Yatan Bueno.
