Dubai-based Emirates announced on Monday that it will suspend all flights to and from Baghdad from August 30 due to the civil unrest in Iraq.

“Customers have been informed that Emirates flights to and from Baghdad have been cancelled on 30 August due to reports of civil unrest and a curfew in Iraq,” the airline said in a statement.

Passengers bound for Baghdad will not be accepted for travel at their point of departure, the statement added. The airline is closely monitoring the situation and apologises for any inconvenience caused to passengers.

Affected customers who have booked through a travel agency should contact them for alternative travel arrangements or refunds. Passengers who booked directly through Emirates can contact their local office for rebooking options or visit emirates.com/refund to request a refund.

12 killed in Baghdad clashes

Supporters of cleric Moqtada Sadr stormed the government palace in Baghdad’s Green Zone after the powerful Shiite leader announced his withdrawal from politics, killing 12 protesters.

As the political crisis escalates and Iraq has not had a new government, prime minister or president for months, tensions have risen, with gunshots at fortified areas housing government buildings and diplomatic missions, AFP reporters said.

The army announced a nationwide curfew from 7:00 pm and security forces then patrolled the capital.
