Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi has spent a month in space and shares his nostalgic thoughts on the journey and our planet.
On March 2, Al Neyadi, two NASA astronauts and one Russian cosmonaut flew to the International Space Station on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
The SpaceX Dragon Crew-6 mission launched at 12:34am (09:34am UAE time) from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The Emirati tweeted, “We started our journey into space a month ago by launching from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Since then, we’ve witnessed more than 450 sunrises and sunsets, and have made significant progress in the experiments and research we’ve conducted for our mission. Together with my team, we continue to work towards our scientific goals.
From Earth to space, I proudly fulfill Zayed’s ambitions. ”
It was the mission’s second launch attempt after February 27 due to a last-minute glitch.
Over the past month, Neyadi has shown the world his day job and taught many of us the basics of microgravity and space exploration.
Recently, Al Neyadi released photos of him on the International Space Station separating oxygen from hydrogen to obtain breathable air, and refining previously used water and other liquids to obtain clean water again.
Al Neyadi said: “Water is a precious resource in space. It is used to create clean air by separating oxygen from hydrogen, and it is also recycled to provide a continuous supply of clean water.
“In these photos, I am disposing of tanks that recycle water while wearing a PPE kit to prevent contamination.
“Ensuring well-maintained life support systems is a critical task for astronauts, especially during long-duration missions.”
The Emirati astronaut emphasized that personal protective equipment is important to prevent any contamination during the decontamination process.
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center shared a photo of Al Neyadi and the free-flying AstroBee robot assistant performing routine tasks at the KIBO Laboratory on the International Space Station.
Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi was in the KIBO laboratory module on the International Space Station with the free-flying AstroBee robot assistant, the space center wrote.
“The cube-shaped AstroBee robot is being tested for its ability to assist astronauts with everyday tasks and provide data to ground controllers on the International Space Station.
While on the International Space Station, Sultan will also use the Astrobee to conduct educational challenges with UAE universities.
Al Neyadi has been on a mission aboard the International Space Station and has been sharing his views and some breathtaking photos of Earth.
His recent photos show massive dust storms in the Sahara Desert.
He tweeted: “From so far away, I am constantly reminded of the beauty of our planet.
One of my favorite activities aboard the ISS is getting into the Earth observation lens and capturing breathtaking sights that can only be seen from space.
I’m excited to share with you this image of a dust storm I recently clicked over the stunning Sahara Desert. “
The astronaut who made history with the longest Arabian space mission said: “On Earth, exercise is important. In space, it is critical. On the International Space Station, we exercise 2.5 hours a day to avoid micro- Gravity-induced muscle atrophy and bone loss.”
Astronaut Al Neyadi and his Crew-6 colleagues have begun their mission aboard the International Space Station, NASA said.
The four Crew-6 members are two NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren Hoberg, Russian cosmonaut Andrei Fedyaev and UAE cosmonaut Sultan Al Neiyadi.
The crew will stay on the space station for six months, where they will conduct more than 200 science experiments and technology demonstrations, according to SpaceX.
The mission was the first spaceflight for Neyadi, Hoburg and Fedyaev.
Neyadi, 41, is the fourth astronaut from an Arab country and the second from the oil-rich United Arab Emirates.
Fedyaev is the second Russian cosmonaut to fly to the International Space Station on a SpaceX rocket. NASA astronauts regularly travel to the space station on Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
Space has been a rare arena for cooperation between Moscow and Washington since Russia’s offensive in Ukraine plunged them into a bitter rivalry.
