When Jupiter, Earth, and the Sun align on the same line, what’s called a “Jupiter opposition” occurs.
Jupiter will be in opposition on September 26 at 20:00 UTC. At opposition, Jupiter was 3.95 AU or 591 million kilometers or 33 light minutes from our planet.
All planets in the solar system orbit the sun. At certain points in these orbits, Earth finds itself directly between the sun and another planet. This is the moment when that planet is called “opposition.”
During opposition, the planet appears at its largest and brightest and is above the horizon for most of the night. For stargazers and astrophotographers, this is an ideal time to view and photograph quality planets. Jupiter sets on the same day as its closest approach to the sun and Earth.
That’s because the opposition occurs very close to Jupiter’s perihelion — January 21, 2023 — the point at which it is closest to the sun on its 12-year orbit. Jupiter’s September 2022 opposition and early 2023 perihelion juxtapose, bringing the planet closer to Earth at this opposition than it has been in 59 years (since 1963).
Developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), the emirate’s leading archaeological and ecotourism project is located in the historic Mleiha Dunes, approximately 40 minutes from Sharjah City Lights.
