As Russian champion Bivol defended his belt against Mexican challenger Ramirez, United Arab Emirates fans were captivated by the local boxer’s three fights.
Fahad al-Bloushi extended his record from 12 to 11 victories with a unanimous decision victory over his Georgian opponent Iraki Shariashvili in the super flyweight bout.
A quick jab and body shot in front of a massive home crowd gave Shariashvili the points.
“I feel like I’m on cloud nine,” he told the media after the game. “I made my mom proud, I made my dad proud, I made the country proud. It means a lot to me to make this statement to the nation because this is my hometown; it gave me everything, I just Want to give me the same thing back.”
Later in the night, super flyweight Sultan Nuimi blocked India’s Sokhebhak in the seventh round.
Before the referee stopped the game, Al-Nuami delivered a series of blows, including a body blow, that sent his opponent back.
“Just know it’s the biggest fight night in the history of the UAE and you’ve done really well…I’m honoured to show the world what a local fighter can do at a high level,” he said.
“…we’re just trying to get more locals into the sport, and that’s just the beginning.”
Three-time national champion Majid Nakbi failed to score a hat-trick for the UAE victory, losing by unanimous decision to Philippine lightweight John Lawrence Ordoño.
After the first loss of his career, Nakbi said: “He was a tough opponent and it was my first loss. I don’t have to make excuses. As a man, I’m accepting my loss.”
“I’ll take it, but I’ll learn a lot from it, improve and come back better.”
Also competing that night was Britain’s Chantelle Cameron, who defeated Jessica McCaskill by unanimous decision to become the undisputed super lightweight champion.
