Doctors at a UAE hospital have managed to save the life of a 90-year-old Emirati patient through delicate aortic surgery.

Professor Tariq Al Mahdi, Director of Surgery at Sharjah University Hospital, said: “The emergency department of the hospital received a 90-year-old patient in critical condition at 11pm. He collapsed due to insufficient circulation and suffered severe pain in his abdomen and back.

“After a clinical examination, Consultant Vascular Surgeon Dr Ahmed El Fassi was called in because there was a case of ruptured aorta, one of the most critical and difficult cases,” he said.

“This is a rare case of intra-abdominal blood leakage due to aortic perforation and sag of 80 mm, in addition to severe symptoms requiring urgent surgical intervention,” Al Mahdi added.

“After medical consultation with vascular surgeon Dr Saher Arour, we decided to intervene immediately to save the patient,” said Dr Ahmed Al Fassi.

The doctor performed a composite operation on the aorta and its branched pelvic arteries, and implanted a stent using advanced interventional techniques.

Dr. Al Fassi added that based on the post-operative clinical and vital assessment, the patient’s condition has been fully stabilized.

Dr Hakam Yassin, Medical Director at Sharjah University Hospital, said: “We work as an integrated medical team in the delicate and complex surgical specialties with medical excellence. Diagnostic radiology, skilled consultant vascular surgery, comprehensive support from the nursing team, and support from a team of consultants in the anesthesia and intensive care departments.”
