United Arab Emirates – A group of young Emirati engineers at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP) have broken new ground in the development of prosthetics using 3D printing.
These 3D printed prosthetics outperform those made by existing methods. They are lightweight, strong, comfortable, customizable, accurate, and inexpensive to manufacture.
This next-generation prosthetic will ease the transition for patients who have lost limbs through accidents, natural disasters and war, as well as those of determination. They can be customized with software to meet a patient’s needs and can be manufactured much faster.
Research team member Abdulqader said the breakthrough was achieved at SRTIP’s Sharjah Open Innovation Laboratory (SoiLAB) using industrial-grade 3D printing technology and artificial intelligence-based software.
“This represents the biggest leap forward in the UAE’s prosthetics sector, demonstrating the country’s capabilities and the Emirate of Sharjah’s status as an incubator for innovation and scientific research on a global scale,” he said. “We have carried out extensive research and development to ensure that the prosthetic leg is not only lightweight and strong, but also stylish, comfortable and adaptable to the different needs of the user. Using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence software, we are able to generate a unique design that is very Light but durable, traditionally impossible to manufacture”
There are many benefits to using 3D printing technology to create prosthetics. Compared with traditional methods, it greatly reduces the cost. It increases accuracy and customization, and also allows for the production of more complex and precise parts. Additionally, 3D printing reduces the margin for human error due to the high precision and expert finishing of these industrial-grade machines.
The new development is in line with SRTIP’s breakthrough feat in 3D printing technology, which also covers areas such as dentures, bones, medical and surgical devices, and hearing aids.
Mr. Hussain Al Mahmoudi, Chief Executive Officer of SRTIP, said: “This breakthrough by our young Emirati engineers reflects the emergence of the next generation of experts and professionals in the field of additive manufacturing and 3D technology. It is part of our comprehensive professional program to discover and cultivate young of Emirati engineers, preparing them to become future leaders, skilled industrial entrepreneurs and specialist specialists.”
He added: “SOILAB is Sharjah’s first incubation hub for start-ups and innovative businesses, allowing the community of practitioners to exchange materials and learn new skills, with a focus on engaging participants with learning content, which includes schools and universities. The The idea is to provide students, researchers and innovators with the latest technology and advanced machines at a nominal cost, in addition to attracting international companies to conduct research.”
The achievements of Emirati engineers reflect SRTIP’s success in nurturing Emirati talent. Last year, SRTIP celebrated the graduation of its second cohort of young Emirati engineer trainees as part of a training and qualification program for future industries and technologies, the most important of which is Additive Manufacturing. The program has been a great success as participants were selected from various universities and colleges in the UAE with academic backgrounds and qualifications in engineering.
Statistics from the World Health Organization show that there are more than 40 million amputees in developing countries, most of whom are victims of conflict. According to Doctors Without Borders, only 5% of people receive care in the form of prosthetics.
