Endurance Sailor’s Clock 236 days non-stop on board UAE registered boats

ABU DHABI: After 236 days of sailing, BAYANAT took second place in the 2022 Golden Globe Regatta (GGR), one of the most challenging sailing competitions in the world. Former Indian Navy officer Cmdr. (Retired) Abhilash Tomy travels the world non-stop on a UAE-registered vessel sponsored by Bayanat, an Abu Dhabi-based geospatial AI solutions provider.

The boat is a Rustler 36 with race number ’71’ and Emirates Ensign – a nod to the founding of the nation in 1971.

The third GGR kicked off on September 4th in the picturesque French port of Les Sables-d’Olonne. Thirty sailors originally signed up for the race, but only sixteen made it to the starting line. As a testament to the grueling nature of the race, only two boats were able to complete the demanding course while contenders remained in the race.

Abhilash’s perilous 30,000 nautical mile circumnavigation of the world is an epic tale of resilience and courage. Displaying indomitable stamina and virtuosity, Abhilash pushed his seamanship to the limit as he fought through violent storms, relentless isolation and months of solitude while coping with major damage to his ship . He crossed the finish line against all odds, a testament to his unwavering determination and spirit.

Since the inaugural event in 1968, the Golden Globe competition has required entrants to sail unaccompanied, using technology that was available in its initial version, so any modern equipment and satellite-powered navigation aids are prohibited. Along the way, competitors must cross five of the world’s largest capes, notorious for their extreme weather conditions and unpredictable water currents, before returning to their starting point. Even with modern equipment, the scale of the challenge is so vast that fewer people have sailed around the world alone than climbed Mount Everest or traveled through space.

“I am delighted and honored to have accomplished such a feat,” Tommy said. “It’s been a phenomenal journey and I thank everyone who has supported me including my family, friends and my many fans from the UAE, India and around the world. I would especially like to thank my sponsor Bayanat for getting me involved Made possible. This life-changing experience was extremely challenging, but the rewards were priceless. I hope my journey inspires others to chase their dreams with passion and determination.”

Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Bayanat, said: “We are extremely proud of Abhilash’s achievement at the Golden Globe Awards, which has brought great admiration to us. Endurance on display. Abhilash brought great joy to the UAE and Indian communities. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire generations to come.”

This is Abirash’s second time competing for the Ballon d’Or.

He suffered life-threatening injuries after a storm knocked out his mast during the 2018 race, nearly crippling him and forcing him to withdraw.
