The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) announced today (September 22) that Nawah, its operations and maintenance unit, has successfully started up Unit 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra area of Abu Dhabi.
Nawah, a joint venture between Enec and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco), has been safely completing a comprehensive test programme ahead of the successful start-up of the third nuclear power reactor at the Barakah plant.
This milestone represents significant progress by Enec in bringing four units of the Arab region’s first multi-unit operating nuclear power plant online and accelerating the UAE’s power sector to net-zero emissions by 2050.
Enec said the start-up of Unit 3 came a year after the start of Unit 2, with the next key milestone being the connection of Unit 3 to the national grid in the coming weeks.
Once in commercial operation, Unit 3 will add another 1,400 MW of zero-carbon power capacity to the national grid, a major boost to the UAE’s energy security and an important step in the fight against climate change.
It added that the clean electricity generated by Barakah provides sustainable power for households, business and high-tech industries in the UAE, and the successful development of the plant is a testament to the country’s extensive large-scale project management capabilities.
Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of Enec, said: “We today reached another important milestone in delivering the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme as we continue to provide the UAE with strategic clean energy.”

Commenting on the milestone, Nawah Chief Executive Engineer Ali Al Hammadi said: “The launch of Unit 3 clearly demonstrates that our Emirati talent has developed safe and secure expertise and capabilities in close collaboration with international experts and organisations. Operates three nuclear units.”
“We are looking forward to the upcoming connection of Unit 3 to the national grid as we strive to meet 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs,” said Al Hammadi.
He added that over the next few weeks, Unit 3 will be connected to the national grid and the operations team will continue to gradually increase the power level, known as the Power Boost Test (PAT).-TradeArabia News Service
