The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (Enec) has signed three agreements with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, China Nuclear Overseas Corporation and China Nuclear Industry Corporation.

China has 56 nuclear power plants in operation and 20 more under construction. China recently announced a plan to invest $440 billion in building an additional 150 reactors over the next 15 years to improve its energy security and energy sustainability.

The signing of the MoU was attended by Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Enec.

Operation and Maintenance

Ahmed Al Mazrouei, executive director of fuel procurement and analysis at Enec, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations and China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas Corporation with its Chinese counterparts. The first MoU will focus on possible cooperation between the two parties in nuclear energy operation and maintenance. The second MoU will focus on cooperation in the field of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.

Dr. Mohamed Chookah, Enec’s Vice President of Nuclear Fuel Management, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China National Nuclear Corporation focusing on possible cooperation in nuclear fuel supply and investment.

Al Hammadi met with senior officials from these organizations, who presented their business plans and discussed opportunities for future collaboration.

During his visit, Al Hammadi, who will become President of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) in October 2022, met senior staff from WANO’s Shanghai branch, met the team there and was updated on their latest activities. WANO includes more than 120 members and is responsible for operating more than 430 nuclear power reactors in 30 countries around the world.
