“She Kills Monsters”
Cal Poly Humboldt’s Dance, Music and Drama Department and related students will present “She Kills Monsters” written by Qui Nguyen and directed by Sarah Peters Gonzales.
Opening night is Friday at 7:30pm at the John Van Duzer Theater. Tickets are generally $10, $8 for seniors, children, and students, and free for Caltech Humboldt students with ID.Tickets can be purchased at the gate or in advance at centerarts.humboldt.edu. Proof of COVID-19 vaccinations and booster vaccines are still required for all guests on campus. As of press time, wearing a mask is not mandatory, but strongly encouraged.
“She Kills Monsters” tells the story of Agnes Evans (Mia Carter) who loses her parents and sister Tilly (Geneva Bell) in a car accident. Agnes, estranged from her sister while she was alive, embarks on an adventure to get to know her sister better by playing the Dungeons & Dragons mods written by Tilly, and discovers things she never imagined.
“This story is about trying to understand someone who died prematurely,” Gonzalez said. “This theme is especially fitting after years of separation, fear of being together in person, and the unexpected loss of a loved one. It can feel heavy on different shows, but this one effectively makes you laugh with a lot voice and stage battles to think about those sad feelings.”
While many of the show’s jokes stem from D&D’s gameplay, the show is also full of 1990 references.
“The show does a great job of connecting different generations. …The actors and designers, whether they lived in the ’90s or not, had a great time with the cultural references that influenced the show everything from lighting to clothing to music,” Gonzalez said.
This production – aimed at audiences 15 and older – features adult language. The show airs Friday and Saturday before continuing on October 28th and 29th, both at 8pm. There are also matinees on Sundays and October 30th at 2pm. All shows are held at the John Van Duzer Theater in Cal Poly Humboldt, Arcata. For more information, please contact the Dance, Music and Drama Department at 707-826-3566 or Theater@humboldt.edu.
SeepeopleS Show
SeepeopleS will perform at Siren Song’s Tavern at 325 2nd Street, Eureka on Monday at 8pm.
The show’s press release said the band’s recently released sixth album “A Field Guide to Surviving in This Dying World” — having toured the country for more than two decades, “turns their provocative, politically charged music to the masses.”
“Everything I write for SeepeopleS is about how our world exists and collapses around us. But if this world, our world, is coming to an end, how do we survive together?” SeepeopleS bandleader, songwriter and Producer Will Bradford said.
